Why Do People Drink Milk?

In response to chique:

Point 1: low-blow -_-;.

Point 2: was already discussed above.

Points 3 and 4: I do believe that Isabelle or her daughter were referring to the veal calves. Veal calves are placed in itty bitty boxes in such a way that they can not move, and therefore develop no muscle. That way their meat stays nice and tender, the weird meds help too I’d imagine.

my mom is completely milk-is-evil. (I just can’t do, i likes me some dairy) anyway, her main reason is the apparently evil Bovine Growth Hormone that is supposed to whack out your system. (if you get ben and Jerry’s, you’ll notice the little anti-BGH label)

i think another reason she doesn’t like it now is that when she stopped eating/drinking it 5 years ago, her agonizing, horrible hayfever and allergies completely stopped. same thing happened for my aunt. I also notice an increase in um . . . snot after a big bowl of ice cream, etc. but hey, maybe that’s a family thing.

oh, and you haven’t had cereal until you’ve had it with vanilla (or even chocolate!) soymilk. (8th Continent and Silk are particularly yummy) mmmmm. . . . chocolate soymilk . . . . .mmmmm, i mean Arrrrr!

If you can get some milk from a cow directly you can compare it to the crap you get in the store. Fresh milk from a cow is just incredible & the cream rises to the top. At our local fair we used to ask for it cause they have to milk those cows daily & they just throw out that milk.

Cats drink cow milk if you give them some

Yeah but it is NOT good for them.

Yum, dairy! I love a big piece of chocolate cake with a tall frosty glass of milk, or a large extra-cheese pizza, or a whole pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, or a nice hunk of New York Extra Sharp Cheddar, or a potato with butter and sour cream…

<drools into keyboard>

I happen to be lactose intolerant, but I honestly don’t care. The symptoms aren’t pleasant, but I can live with them. (My sister/roommate no doubt has a different opinion about the resulting flatulence problem, but hey, she’s not paying any rent anyway.) Nothing is better than dairy. NOTHING. I’ve given up most red meat and fast food and bread and carbs, but…

THEY CAN TAKE MY DAIRY WHEN THEY PRY IT FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS.

<leaves to go pop a Lactaid before lunch>

Count me in the milk-is-evil (for me, anyway) camp, because the mere thought of the foul substance touching my lips makes my stomach lurch in terror. I used to be in the “from my cold, dead hands” camp, several glasses a day, but one day something happened, and it started to make me sick. Now the taste of it is all it takes to entirely lose my appetite. And, as I am learning right now, the thought of the taste of it is none too pleasant either. There’s nothing like cramps and nausea to make you re-assess your tastes !

It was very sudden. I gave up meat and then milk gave up on me. I don’t know if it’s lactose-intolerance, it seems to be dependant on the fat content and/or the format and/or the preparation - some dairy products (eg yogurt, goat milk), some preparations (ie if milk is cooked in something), and some quantities (eg a little bit of cheese) are hunky-dory. Higher-fat cheese is much worse than hard cheese (although tastier). Ice cream is out of the question.

And, FTR, my allergies/hay fever are as bad as ever. Not that I’m bitter.

A point about the dairy industry - if you are a vegetarian (which I am) it’s necessary to think about the entire meat industry. If you consume dairly products you have to acknowledge that you are participating in animal deaths - a cow/goat can’t produce milk without producing babies, and boy baby cows/goats are not usually allowed to flourish to happy adulthood.

But mostly, milk just tastes nasty !

My daughter is a Veegan and only drinks soy.

As others have mentioned, the “milk is evil” theory is primarily a political campaign orchestrated by animal rights activists. Their claims have little basis in fact. If it were really bad for you, the FDA will pull it off the shelves.

For the record, I drink milk. Lots of it. Yum yum. Not only does it taste good, but it’s good for me.

Milk has always been heavenly. I and my wife (she found it great to find a milk lover too) get three gallons at a time for the family. We seem to go through it about a gallon a day. We both started with Whole but have long since weened ourselves to Skim. It actually tastes better than water. Water has a heavy harsh taste, almost more parching than milk. Milk is smooth and (skim) lighter and more refreshing than water.

The best is milk in a tin cup. The same milk in a glass, cup, whatever, poured into a tin cup is 4 times better - don’t ask me why (okay, I think it’s temperature conduction). And the colder the better. It’s just great if it’s in the freezer a bit and comes out with a crust of milk-ice around the lip.

I was volunteering in Hawaii working with dolphins when I just had to get some milk at the local store. Why was I hesitating? I was on a limited budget and I couldn’t justify $4.19 a gallon for milk. I lasted two days. Buying it was the best decision!

Blasphemer!

Well, I don’t agree with the idea that “milk is evil”, but surely it’s not natural. All mammals become lactose intolerant shortly after nursing. I believe the main reason Europeans don’t have much of a problem with lactose intolerance because they’ve been forcing it down their throats for several hundred years, and have become acclimated.
What makes me laugh is that 90% of African-Americans and Asians are lactose intolerant, 75% of Native Americans, and yet, it’s the lactose intolerant that are viewed as abnormal o_O.

I agree. If it weren’t for milk, I don’t know what I’d drink. I have it with every meal, and oftentimes in between.

I get a lot of weird looks because I completely prefer whole or Vitamin D milk to anything else, though. A lot of people tend to think that’s gross.

And when I’m in South America (Chile) they have the whole milk that comes in the boxes and… man, I’m salivating just thinking about it.

Yes, I’m a Blasphemur, but I drink too much milk to keep taking in that much fat (at least from milk  )

It reminds me, shy guy about traveling to Cuneo, a small city in Italy. I asked the hotel for milk but found that what they have is milk in a box at room temperature. Seems they have a milk product that can sit on the unrefrigerated shelf for at least three days {yuch}. However they put a couple of boxes in the fridge and it was acceptable the next day.

PS: Why does “fridge” have a ‘d’ but “refrigerator” doesn’t?

I too have noticed milk in hot places (Spain, Brazil) is sold in boxes off the shelf. (There must be UHT or some other preservative in it.)

I have also noticed that North Americans have the biggest fridges in the world.

Connection?

Really? Do you find it odd that sources that giving such huge numbers use phrases like “may be affected by lactores intolerance” and “report having experienced” or “some experts believe.”

Sometimes, if I eat a hot pepper, my eyes water. Do you think they’re poison?

j.c.

Think about it this way. In most cases, if you stop drinking milk after nursing, you will become lactose intolerant within a year or two after. Or even if you stop drinking milk and also stop consumption of a significant amount of milk products at any point in time of your life. It may work differently in Europeans, seeing as how they’ve been drinking milk for so long, but I’m not sure. But by nature, we were not meant to be drinking milk after our nursing stages. I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m just saying it’s unnatural, simply meaning, we would not be adapted to drinking milk if we didn’t drink so damn much.

Just UHT or complete sterilization of the milk is needed to make them last longer. No need for preservatives.

By the way, milk can also be bought in boxes off the shelf in the US. I like milk that way better than fresh in gallons. More malt-like taste.

While I agree that the milk is evil is exaggerated, I think that’s stretching it-they haven’t pulled a lot of other things off the shelf that are bad for us.

Such as?
