Why do people hate Tom Cruise?

great post, amanset. Consider yourself “liked”, if there were a ‘like’ button.

I don’t have to but I like to.

But thank you for sharing your wealth of compositional experience with me, I feel both humbled and honoured that you have chosen to take an interest in my style of posting.

But I do not wish to gain an unfair advantage over other posters, so perhaps you could save your generosity for those more worthy then me .

Keep the change !

As to Scientology, when I was young I used to read old Science Fiction pulp magazines lent to me by an uncle and S.F. at that time was very much a minority/cult affair where the authors all knew, and often socialised with each other.

I remember reading once, and for the life of me can’t remember if it was Issac Asimov, or Arthur C. Clarke, relating a story about how at a late night drinking session, where they were shooting the shit about saving the world etc. Hubbard said that the easiest way to get rich was to start your own religion.

Personally I believe that story.

And to answer SCUMPUP, yes Cruise is rich etc. but I dislike the general principal of whispering campaigns and bullying generally.

They can lead to unforseen outcomes and turn very nasty, nastier then the instigators imagined when they started out on what are basically “Hate Campaigns”.

Its not that many years ago that Jews were supposed to eat babies and various ethnic groups lusted after white women.

Out of little acorns…

So, Lust4life, you understand why Scientology is hateful but don’t understand why some of us don’t like the world’s most prominent proponent of it?

No I didn’t say I found it hateful, just that it was phony.
Which you could say about many religious groups old and new.

And until Cruise starts telling people to stone adulterers, or kill the unbelievers, or celebrating soldiers killed; as gods punishment for homosexuality, or that widows should be cremated alive on their dead husbands funeral pyre , then I think I’ll be quite laid back in my opinion about him.

I reiterate that I’m not a fan of his, or think that he’s a particulary talented actor, but I don’t hate him because of that.

I’m strongly opposed to scientology, and really dislike an awful lot of what Cruise has done and said in public in recent years… but I have to say I think he’s a fairly good actor. He’s not Sean Penn, but he’s certainly a lot better than, say, Keanu Reeves. One scene I particularly remember being impressed by was when he and Dakota Fanning were escaping from the tripods by car in War of the Worlds and she was freaking out and he was trying to calm her down while pretty much freaking out himself.

my point exactly. I hate the little fuck.

Not only was Tom Cruise not in The Hunt for Red October, none of the principal characters were supposed to speak German. Your, uh… thetan waves need realigning or something.

“the Hunt for Red October thing,” I think meaning that they lampshaded the language issue in a similar way, is how I read it.

Upon re-reading, I do believe you’re right. Off to the theta repair shop for me!

Apologies, Loach, I’m sure your thetans are glowing with that healthy thetan glow.

This is basically how I feel about him. What little I know about the way his divorce from Kidman was handled seems weird and ugly, but I know nothing about their private life and it may be that he was very unhappy in the marriage. But no matter how he felt about her, or Katie Holmes for that matter, I think it was inappropriate for him to make such a big, public deal about how his new girlfriend made him so much happier than his ex-wife. That’s the sort of thing you says to your friends in private, not on national television for your children and everyone they know to see.

The way Cruise and Holmes’s young daughter has been paraded around before the media probably also made his older children feel bad, especially since they were adopted and might understandably wonder why their father seemed so much more excited about his biological daughter. However, I’m sure the Cruise/Kidman children are better off for having been kept largely out of the public eye, and that alone makes me think a lot better of Kidman as a parent than I do of Cruise.

My wife knew him at one point. He’s a complete fucking idiot.

That was covered under “He’s a Scientologist.”

My godfather (now deceased) was a fighter pilot, and met Tom Cruise when he was shooting Top Gun. He came away with a very low opinion of him. I’m not sure exactly why, but according to his wife he referred to Cruise from then on as “that weenie”. I suspect the actual word he used was much harsher, but this is how it was repeated to me.

Cheers. I guess that’s my “good post for the year” done

Drugs as in the illegal kind yes. But the TC/BS comment was about the legal kind, which according to TC are all bad an unnecessary and there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance but you can cure all illnesses with vitamins. Which are, evidently, neither chemicals nor legal drugs.

I’d love to see him cast in a remake of “Cruising”.
