Why do people like to take naps?

I know sleeping at night is required for good health, but why sleep during the day??? To me, it’s a waste of time. In that time you could be working, increasing the amount of money you’re making. Napping ruins “play” too. There’s so many cool things to do!!! Weightlifting. Coaching local football games. Taking your jeep out in the hills. Playing your favorite videogame or reading your favorite book. Making love. The things you can do with your time are endless!!!

Think about it, when you’re sleeping, you’re just lying there like a corpse. You’re doing nothing, and you lose all awareness. Creepy, isn’t it???

My theory is if you like to sleep too much, either you have too much going on in your life or not enough. You must be overworked, and as a result you collapse in exhaustion. Or, you have too much time on your hands, and just sleep to relieve boredom!

My roommate drives me crazy. He flops around the couch and sleeps 1-2 hours every day. Sometimes his girlfriend even joins him!!! What is she thinking? When he is sleeping, chores go undone, the dogs get nervous, and I have nobody to talk to. Right now, he is a average sized guy. But I worry if he spends too much time inactive he could contract obesity!!!

It’s not just my roommate, it seems like almost everyone likes to take naps. Sometimes “normal” human behavior really fascinates me and frustrates me at the same time!

And eating, wtf? Why do people like to eat? It’s bizarre.

According to sleep researchers, it’s actually a normal part of the human cycle and has cognitive benefits.

But everyone is different, you may not feel a need to nap.

I always take a nap when I can. I have done this for years. If I lay down for even 15-20 minutes, I wake up feeling refreshed and re-charged.

What the heck, so he has to stay up to entertain you on top of all the other stuff? As long as he does the chores and walks the dog in a decent time frame, let him do what he wants.

Sometimes I don’t sleep well during the night and at 7 or 8 pm I think, “Man, a nap would be really great. I’m so sleepy. I’m warm and had a nice dinner. Just lay back, relax, don’t have to do anything, and just ruminate a bit until I fall asleep for an hour. It’ll feel great. Man, I have a great life.” Taking a nap is awesome. Every now and then I feel bad because I did want to do other things and let myself fall asleep by accident reading a book, or I overslept a little, but it’s not often.

For the record, I only sleep 6 hours or so a night so any time spent napping still doesn’t get me up to 8 hours daily. I probably spend the same amount of time doing things as everyone else even with the naps. So, I’m gonna jibe you back. So you probably sleep a full 8 hours, eh, eh? You could be doing all this STUFF during those hours! Why are you laying around sleeping like a normal person?! You should be getting up and running a mile with a tire strapped to your back!

Because they’re tired and it makes them feel not tired. Now you know.

Some people don’t want to nap. They’d rather be up and about doing “stuff”. But sleep has a way of knocking you out. You can either fight it fruitlessly, or just accept it as something your brain has to do.

Years ago I used to fall into bed as soon as I’d get home. I’d sleep for one, maybe two hours and wake up feeling horrible. I’m so happy I have more energy and “vim” now, but it’s not due to any conscious choices I’ve made. I’m just older and probably healthier than I was back then.

I’m not really a big fan of naps, and I kinda agree with you on the “why sleep when you can do other things”.

But sometimes I have a really shitty night and I have an hour to kill between jobs and…well…I wanna sleep to recharge.

I honest-to-God cannot tell whether this is a parody.

I’m leaning about 70/30 that it is, in which case, well done, but judging by the responses last time this was brought up, the point’s likely to be lost.

If not, you got your answer in post #6, and congratulations on the most ridiculous one of these yet.

You nap because you’re tired and you don’t feel like doing other things. Maybe you don’t get tired during the middle of the day, my wife is like that, but I do and I take a 15-20 min nap to feel better.

To hell with regular sleep just take a nap every now and again.

Not surprised; most mammals take naps or sleep in shorter cycles. I guess it’s like eating – you COULD eat just one large meal a day but most people benefit from repeated smaller meals/snacks throughout the day.

I am one who rarely naps; I am low-energy anyway so I don’t get tired out enough to nap. Plus it takes me so long to unwind enough to fall asleep, I’ve wasted a lot of time getting to the nap, which then leaves me groggy.

But my mom napped every day like clockwork. She could fall right to sleep and then be fully awake afterwards. I can see the charm of being able to go lie down whenever you want.

“Sleep, those little slices of death — how I loathe them.”

― Edgar Allan Poe

This makes me think you’re still quite young. I used to feel the same way but now try to nap every single day after lunch. In comparison to others, it seems I sleep less and am more easily woken by noise, so maybe that’s got something to do with it.

With keen insight like that, you should become some sort of guru.

I have two children under the age of five, one of whom is autistic. I haven’t had more than six hours a night for years. I very rarely get a chance to nap, but when I do, you better believe I take it.

Funny, I always read these posts as stealth brags. “Look at all the fun things I do, you lazy, inferior sods!” Or does stealth brag fit into your 30%?

OMG. That totally is going around. Make sure you disinfect the sofa after he’s done – you wouldn’t want to get fat-cooties and contract obesity too!!!

Yeah, you don’t want it; they’re still looking for a cure.

I think the main thing the OP is neglecting is the idea that people don’t always get enough sleep, whether by design or accident, and taking naps is one way to lessen that fatigue.

I don’t typically take naps either, but after our son was born for a while, I was so tired during the day that nothing seemed like a better idea than taking a nap in the early evening, and it did refresh me. (for those of you without kids, the first few months are a real sleep-deprivation experiment).

I don’t understand the people who ostensibly get a good night’s sleep and then intentionally and habitually take a bunch of naps during the day. The people I’ve known who do that tend to be depressed or on medication or have something else going on.
