Sheesh, I recognise easily every one of you in this thread. Familiar names all around, and I usually take note.

But I must not respond often.

I think I’m usually pretty low on the radar. Sometimes I start threads just to see if I can get 15 people to view them. Then, a week later, I start a new thread and see if I can beat that record.

I kid. This place is immense. There are many people who feel similarly, I’m certain. But I, for one, take notice of everyone in this thread so far.

Yep, me too.

I tend to bounce into opinionated debate threads, see folks lining up on either side of a divide, and feel like I have a 3rd perspective that’s better than either of them.

I post it.

Either no one notices, or there’s a consensus that it’s kinder to pretend that no one noticed that put such an asinine viewpoint into words than to call attention to it, I haven’t figured out which.

I can’t remember what it was now, but I know I’ve noticed you saying something smart more than once. So there.

I occasionally post long-ass analytical manifestos that get highly and effectively ignored, but I blame that less on the other Dopers as the fact that I’m posting long-ass analytical manifestos. Really, who has the time?

Often, I’ll read a post that I really appreciate, but I hesitate to post just to say “good point” or “well said” or “LOL”; if everybody did that, the board would soon be awash with trivial posts that say nothing.

That, plus even if I had something substantive to add to the really good post, chances are someone else beat me to it. I use this to console myself when a particularly clever thread I start garners only a handful of responses. I say to myself, “for each of those 3 replies there were 300 who wold have replied the same way.” I then say back to myself, “You’ve got to get a life,” to which invariably I rejoin, “Bite me.”

My doctor still holds hope I can live a semi-productive life once the drug therapy takes effect.

I think it would be good to have a feature like Amazon.com has, where each review says something like “22 out of 314 people found this useful”.

This way we could get feedback about what people think of our ideas, without flooding the board with “Ditto!” or “Wrong!”

Also, if vBulletin had two buttons for each post (“Agree”, “Disagree”), it would be much faster than replying to the post, so much of the current barrier to demonstrating agreement or disagreement would be eliminated.

I think some threads become little more than the written equivilant of “sound bites.” People don’t actually read the other posts, they just want their moment too.
Not all of course, but enough to make anyone feel like their clever, insightful, instructive post has become merely more chaff in the wind.
I no longer post in mega threads. I figure someone smarter than me already said whatever I was going to.

Worse yet, you post something absolutely brilliant, expecting it to be quoted on the evening news, it’s so good, and it kills the thread!

I’m more surprised when people do notice my posts. I don’t feel like I’ve made much of an impression on people, and I’m always grateful when someone indicates that I have. Until the day comes when someone says, “That Telperien really gets up my nose,” or worse.

There have been several times when I make a post and mention “ABC” and no one comments, then several posts later another poster will mention “ABC” and everyone will react, saying, “Ooooh, Other Poster is right! He’s so clever!”

The bizarre thing about this thread is that the posters that have mentioned not getting noticed are some of the posters I take special notice of (albeit silently): Foxtrot, norinew, and AHunter3. I always find it weird to look at a poster’s name and then start listing off in my head the things I know about that poster.

What I’ve noticed in those types of threads is that it tends to boil down to two or three people arguing with each other. If you step in with a new opinion, it’s easier to ignore you so you can get back to your Regularly Scheduled Disagreement™.
