Why does Kanye West continue to try and test the boundaries of assholish behavior? [VMA Spoiler]

So if this is staged, how come the publicity people couldn’t have picked someone better for him to harass than a 16 year old (or however old she is) girl?

Look at it this way: the VMA is holding all the cards; Kanye can stop nothing if the VMA wants it badly enough. He simply doesn’t have the votes. In fact, when you think about it, all Beyonce representatives can do at this point is stand up and call Taylor Swift names.

Can you explain? I didn’t get it.

It was used in living rooms all accross the country last night.

And I venture to say that even those who claim to never use the term, thought to themselves, “God, what a N”.

I’m sure that’s what you’d like to think.

Kanye West has made Dickpedia. Of course, it was a shoe-in.

He’s also schedule to appear as Jay Leno’s first musical guest on Jay’s new show debuting tonight.

Jay to Kanye: “What the hell were you thinking?”

Be glad to. There’s a thread a little ways down the pit titled Who heckled Obama during his address to Congress? where we discuss Joe Wilson’s outburst last week during President Obama’s speech before a joint session of Congress.
I was taking Stephe96’s words and subbing in applicable words for the situation at the VMAs.

For my part, I’m sorry to the OP for somewhat diverting the focus of this thread away from the rant against Kanye. But, honestly, this thread really wasn’t going anywhere anyway. Look at it. I’m on page three and - save me- there’s not a single dissenting voice in this thread.

And why would there be? What Kanye did was rude, grossly inappropriate, and only served as an ego stroke as he diverted the attention to himself on a national stage. As others have pointed out, it would have been perfectly fine if he had walked out, gone to the billions of reporters lurking around outside waiting for a soundbite, and screamed at them about Beyonce’s supah greatness. But he didn’t and there’s probably not a single person in 10,000 who would agree he was correct in his actions. Certainly not any others in this thread.

So let’s look at Joe Wilson. What Joe Wilson did was also rude, grossly inappropriate, and only served as an ego stroke as he diverted the attention to himself on a national stage. Again, it would have been perfectly fine if Mr. Wilson had walked out, gone to the billions of reporters lurking around outside waiting for a soundbite, and screamed at them about the evilness of giving health care to illegal immigrants.

It’s not absolutely congruent, but it’s really about as perfectly analogous a situation as you can get in real life and that it happened less than a week apart only helps to highlight the differences in the reactions.

What differences? There are a number of people both on the boards and in real life who feel that Mr. Wilson’s behavior was not only appropriate, not only justified, but almost mandatory. In my mind, despite Kayne going up on stage to take the mic away, what Mr. Wilson did was even worse. Obama wasn’t at an awards show. He was before 535 professionals in their place of business with rules of order to conduct things in a civilized manner. Yet Mr. Wilson gets more support than Kanye! Why is that?

I think we know the answer. People are putting party before country. They see politics as a sport and these all-weather fans will cheer on anything their party does. Even if it directly contradicts what they know in their hearts to be proper behavior and even if they would condemn it if politics were completely removed from the situation.

So that’s it. I just wanted to point this out. You may now all go back to the Kanye bashfest already in progress.

“That’s my bread and butter you’re [guitar riff] with.”

I think many of you are forgetting that the centerpiece (at least initially) was the Michael Jackson tribute featuring Janet Jackson. That would have easily had the headlines on the front page of Yahoo.

If you didn’t see it, it started with a terrific speech by Madonna, and an incredible medley of dance moves from MJ’s classic videos. It was class… and Janet did the dance she did with her big brother in “Scream.” It was awesome and touching, watching her dance in perfect synchronicity with the video image of Michael behind her. Heartbreaking.

If anything, if I was the MTV exec who put that together, I’d be pissed beyond words. Nobody is talking about it because of this assclown.

If it was going to be staged, think about how they staged the Enimem/Sasha Baron Cohen deal. They found a “tough guy,” established, with something of a rep of being a prima donna. The teabagging was extra funny because it happened to Enimem. Does Taylor Swift have a rep? It certainly isn’t one where you’d sympathize with Kanye even a little bit.

If West snatched the mic from Aerosmith or something I might believe it was set up, but on what planet would you agree to take the publicity hit for snatching the mic from a teenaged girl getting her first award? I know West is a publicity whore but even he (or his management) would pass on this.

These things aren’t always scripted. Remember Jamie Foxxx’s dissing of Miley Cyrus? That certainly didn’t appear to be set up, and her dad took it badly… and Foxxx ended up apologizing.

Oh, come on. It’s an MTV award, not one that really matters. It’s like being interrupted during an elementary school valedictorian speech.

Not to nitpick or anything, but shouldn’t it be, “Kanye West doesn’t care about Taylor Swift”?

Chris Rock on the difference between black people and niggas. I submit to you that Kanye West was, indeed, acting like a nigga.

I went and watched Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video - it sucked. I liked the fat white guy in the leotard dancing around better.

Probably, but I was going for the idea that Kanye doesn’t really give a shit about Beyonce’s video and just felt like getiing his ugly-sunglassed face on TV. Plus, “Beyonce” is closer to “black people”.

Well, I’m not a professional musician/entertainer. But I imagine that it means something to Taylor Swift, which is the point. Just like interrupting an elementary school valedictorian speech would probably mean quite a bit to the speaker.

I certainly would take offense to a student jumping up on the podium as I’m teaching a class. Of course, there’s only 20 people present, no video cameras, no broadcast to millions of homes, and no constant links on the internet to the foolishness.

Ah, thanks. Wasn’t following that thread so I was really whooshed in this one. For what it’s worth, your post is a lot funnier to me now.

It will probably move an extre hundred thousand of her records. Plus lead to a headline grabbing and financially gratifying duet with Kanye at the Grammys, or something.

Not staged, because honestly why would you stage THAT?

Er, that’s not a real apology at all. He’s making fun of her:

Perhaps you should read some more of Kanye’s blog posts. His undoubtedly extensive talents do not appear to encompass wit or anything resembling it.

I posted this in the Cafe Society thread, but maybe it would go better here. As bad as Kanye’s VMA stunt was, this is absolutely disgraceful.

He’s already taken on 50, and beaten him in their beef that they had. Last September 11th, 2007- 50 said he’d stop making Solo records if Kanye’s record outsold his (Kanye’s *Graduation *vs. 50’s Curtis). His record then came in 2nd place to Kanye’s. Needless to say, 50’s 4th Studio album came out last year and he’s got another one coming up soon even though.

And no one else seems to care about the other controversy of the night- Lil’ Mama running up on Stage to join Jay Z & Alicia Keys at the end of their performance and posing with them. I think she was trying to pull a Kanye herself and get a lil’ attention.
