why does my site work in one place but not in another?

My site works at work but not at home. I’m stumped.
See this screenshot for proof. The gotomypc window is my work PC where the site works fine, but it won’t work at home. It’s worked before. But I can’t get it on my laptop or my PDA. I usually view it on my pda for convenience and it works… until today.

does it work for you?.. http://www.peterlobley.co.uk/images.php

edit: I’ve tried ftping to it also. and my ftp client (filezilla) says cannot resolve IP address. Could my ISP be blocking it?

Yes, it works for me.

Can you ping it or do an nslookup from your computer at home? If not, something between your home computer and the site is blocking it.

(To ping the site (assuming you’re using Windows), go to your Start menu, select “Run…”, enter “cmd” in the field and hit return. This will open a command prompt window. Type “ping www.peterlobley.co.uk” and hit return. It should return the IP address of the server it’s hosted on and then 4 replies from the server.)

Works for me. Firefox 2.0.0.7

Are certain browsers the problem?

Works for me in IE7, Opera 9.23, and Firefox 2.0.0.7.

Interestingly, connecting straight to the IP results in a restricted view of your home directory: http://208.78.173.8/

Works fine for me (Safari 2.0.4, Firefox 2.0)

Do you have a different Internet Service Provider at home? This has ahppened to me twice due to my ISP (at home) needing to re-propogate their servers. Sometimes a route changes (kind of like a road closure due to construction) and the server has to map the new path (sorta) otherwise it can’t find the site.

Last time it happened to me, there was a clinet’s website that I couldn’t access, even though I KNEW it was there and working fine. A friend of mine who uses the same ISP from the same geographic location had the same problem. Normally the ISP repropogates ever 24-48 hours, but something went wrong.

It may resolve itself quickly enough without any intervention on your part.

It’s working now.

Sunspots!
