Why is Captain Ron such an underappeciated movie?

Captain Ron is Kurt Russel’s 2nd finest character with an eyepatch

It’s sort of a guilty pleasure of mine. Not a great movie, but it’s fun to watch and there really aren’t enough sailing movies out there.

“Nobody knows, boss. Nobody knows.”

It wasn’t very good. Kurt Russell wasn’t bad, but Martin Short was just plain terrible and the story and jokes started lagging after the first third. It’s not terrible overall, but there are many better movies.

It is a funny movie but it’s not really anything more. Not that that is a bad thing. I mean National Lampoons Vacation and Airplane and they are good for a laugh when you need one. But they aren’t great in terms art.

It’s like junk food for the movies, but that’s fine. We all like to eat goodies and snacks, just as we all like movies like this. Of course like fast food, no one admits to actually liking it

Mary Kay Place starkers. What more can you ask?

I like it better than that horrid movie with Goldie Hawn, Overboard.

My fav Cap’n Ron scene: When Ron was sleeping and they think he’s dead, and he had his eyepatch over his GOOD eye. Caught me by surprise an cracked me up. Silly, I know, but there it is.

Its one of my favorite “simple classics”.

I have a question. Do you think the character Capt Ron was a clueless and irresponsible as he appeared to be in the movie? Or do you think Capt Ron was mostly pretending to be that way to make the families trip that much more enjoyable in a “the worst trips are the most memorable” kind of way?

In any case, I think Kurt Russel played that part very well.

And I love the arguement regarding whether guerillas were around those parts and the results of Martin Shorts character being “Mr Right” in that regard.

Yeah, Martin Short’s character was pretty much an asshole.

But the great thing about Captain Ron is the fact that Kurt Russell wears less and less clothing as time goes on.

Also, we like to throw this one in on cold winter days and bask in the Caribbean sun.

(The first time we watched Overboard, I had forgotten Goldie Hawn was in it and did NOT recognize her in the beginning, when she was the Rich Bitch.)

“I dunno dad, that’s what you said about the Guerillas”
“And I was RIGHT, he said GO-rilla not GUR-illa, HUGE difference, HUGE!”
I really like that movie, it’s one my shelf. Might have to watch it again now.

It’s a tolerable movie, but that’s about it.

I think it had loads of potential, but, no cohesiveness, and weak dialogue. A bit too formulaic.

Best wishes,
hh

Kurt Russell was good, but as has been said, Martin Short was terrible and his character was utterly unlikeable. I kept wishing he’d get killed.

Hunky guy in a speedo is cancelled out by dorky Martin Short. It’s a draw. Pity, really, Captain Ron IS a guilty pleasure.

I’ve managed to survive this long without seeing this movie, but any chance there was that I’d ever get around to it has just been blown entirely out of the water by the epic horribleness of the poster art’s photoshopwork. A true hall of famer.
