There is no way to determine intent, so rules should be enforced based on behavior.
I realize it’s not quite as cut and dried as that, but trying to divine intent from someone’s posts is a tricky thing.
Think about this. For all we really know, curlcoat -could- be a massive troll who’s only real intent is to stir up shit. So one way of thinking is that someone who’s posting trollish comments should be treated as they were a troll rather than trying to mitigate their behavior by saying they may not be a troll.
I supposed it’s all theoretical anyway. I’m not advocating curlcoat, as evil as she appears to be, be banned or other mod action be taken.
And here you are, arguing with a bunch of people about what is and isn’t a troll. Are you doing this just to try and get my goat? Or are you just doing it because you are well-intentioned but dumb? It’s difficult to gauge your intent.
Thus, I submit that you are a troll, or at least that we should treat you like one.

Is there some scheme, some arcane plan, some novel way that we could decide who has the right to declare a poster a troll? Something other than a plea to the silent presumed majority or a declaration of dickishness?

Here’s what I don’t understand. Her defense for the fact she receives Social Security is that she was a taxpayer for many years and contributed to it. That’s a valid excuse for her, but regardless of how long I paid taxes and contributed to this program, (and I will happily pay still more taxes for the years that I am out of school.) I’m still scum for taking advantage of it?
Why is that a valid excuse for her, but not for the working poor? I’m not going to get an answer, because no one does. For what it’s worth, I don’t think she’s troll either. She just doesn’t think through her positions, no matter how hard one tries to prod her to do so. I think she must have some profound emotional investment in this particular position, which is why I think Rubystreak’s analysis is probably best. There’s something almost pathological about her hatred of children, which makes me wonder what’s happened to her in her past. (Not that I think everyone who’s not fond of children must be psychologically damaged in some way, but her positions in particular are so extreme it makes me wonder.)

Well, it must be the Alanis Morisette kind of irony, because I think the idea that having rules and following them and maybe asking the mods to reconsider and clarify the rules when they need to be adjusted kinda goes along with the whole idea that you and your ilk aren’t mods, and should therefore quit trying to be mods.
