Why is "eat a dick" considered to be such an insult?

I’ve heard and seen it used many times and never stopped to wonder why it’s considered so insulting or disdainful?

It’s not something I’ve heard often, but maybe I should get out more.

I’d guess the insult comes from the suggestion that the insultee is a gay man and taking a submissive role in sexual relations.

I’ve heard it as “eat a bowl of dicks”, which doesn’t sound as much like sexual innuendo. I think it’s a popular saying just because it sounds hilarious.

I have a t-shirt that suggests such a thing.

“Provide degrading sexual gratification to someone upon my command”. I don’t find it hard to see why that’s offensive.

I typically hear “eat a bag of dicks.” Same premise, I assume.

I really never thought about it sexually. Just that eating (like food-eating) a dick was bad.

That’s the “to go” option.

Yeah, I agree that the singular “eat a dick” is offensive and homophobic. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that in the wild, though.

Well, performing fellatio isn’t intrinsically degrading, I hope.

I think the completely explicit “suck my dick” is the most offensive way of saying it.

The others are on a spectrum of sounding slight less in-your-face and perhaps more amusing with the imagery of a disembodied bowl of dicks, but I don’t find it credible that there’s no sexual aspect when mouths and dicks are involved.

Yep, definitely “bag of dicks” around here (Chicago), and I know it from at least the mid-2000s, possibly late 90s. I assume it’s your bog standard homophobic insult.

So do you feel there’s some (not so subtle) misogyny/homophobia lurking behind the statement? That makes sense. I just never stopped to really examine it before for some reason.

Of course not. The fact that it is so intimate when consensual makes it extremely degrading if your are being commanded/forced to do it.

Along with the coercion aspect, it certainly fits into the pattern of “things that women and gay men do” being used as insults.

All I can really say here is God Bless America!

Being the reasonably proud owner of a reasonable dick (obviously, IMHO) I think it is mildly offensive, but not homophobic.

The phrase can be used against all genders.

“Eat a bag/bowl of dicks” is just an extrapolation from the singular.

For what it is worth, despite my liking for my own penis - and very adventurous taste in food - I think penis as a food source would be disappointing. There’s not a lot of muscle and quite a lot of veins/arteries that drive the hydrodynamics of an erection.

Give me a good gluteus maximus any day. Pan fried. Fava beans.

I don’t know if there is supposed to be causal connection between those two statements, but “can be used against all genders” does not imply that something is not potentially both homophobic and misogynistic.

The causal connection is implied, but yes, sure, I can agree with you.

I’ve never heard either the singular or plural versions of the phrase used in a homophobic or misogynistic manner, but I am willing to concede that this happens.

Yeah, it’s a mistake to assume that insults and/or profanity have to make logical sense.

Whose mother were the snakes on the plane fucking?

I’m struggling to see how it can’t be. I mean, growing up, as boys insulting other boys we might say “go suck a dick!” or “suck my dick.” The implication is that this is teh gay and therefore undesirable and insulting, attacking your “manhood” or whatever bullshit we thought was important back then. “Go eat a pussy” – same type of action on the opposite sex – wouldn’t work as an insult, because we’re supposed to like doing that.

“Eat a bag of dicks” or “eat a dick” is the same type of Neanderthal thinking. It’s “gross” and “insulting” because “real men” don’t want anything to do with dicks in their mouths. I suppose it’s possible over time that this has lost some of its power with greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ persons. Kind of how calling something “gay” apparently isn’t as seemingly homophobic as it once was. (Though I question how true that is.)
