Just within the last day or so, Firefox browser has developed a number of strange symptoms. I was running version 16.whatever, so clicked Upgrade to get 17.0.1 but the symptoms didn’t improve.
To start with a simple example, this page from Huffingtonpost has cluttered, unreadable text but displays OK with Google Chrome. I think Adblock Plus is the only interesting extra I have, but disabling it for that page seems to have no effect. (About a week ago I noticed some other problems at Huffingtonpost: clicking on a page caused two (or more?) videos to start up simultaneously. I didn’t try Chrome on that page; it was before I realized that Firefox has “gone South.”)
I use Cpanel File Manager. It works as usual with Chrome but is suddenly unusable via Firefox: subwindows don’t display at all.
Google Groups (Old style) malfunctions. Click on a thread and it immediately goes to Reply mode, but with display wrong. Again, Chrome works correctly.
Certain pages or images on the 'Net are “Not found” even though I know they’re there and can see them via other browsers.
Do I have a virus? Has the Firefox on my laptop gotten misconfigured and if so, how do I fix it? Firefox is still mostly OK. I’ve no problem accessing SDMB with it and am posting this from Firefox.
Not real happy with Firefox 17.0.1, either. I couldn’t log on to Hotmail for 6 hours with Firefox, but could with Safari. Yahoo mail took on a different look, also. I think in the future that I will wait awhile before downloading the latest and greatest.
It seems that it is a problem with your Firefox installation since I have the same version and haven’t had any problems (your link displays fine, I have pretty much the same add-ons as you, Adblock and the usual Flash, Java, etc). Reinstalling would probably fix the problem, and I mean reinstalling from scratch, not downloading an update like you did (see here for how to export/import your bookmarks so you don’t lose them).
Thanks. I’ll try this tomorrow when I feel especially alert and sober. (Thanks for the bookmark tip – one reason I was reluctant to pursue drastic change.)
I have a different problem with the Firefox at my office. I don’t go to my office very often (I am retired), but I would like to have it back. The problem is that the top and right sides of the screen are missing. There is no address bar, although if I move the cursor to the top of the screen it reappears. But there is no preference button, so I cannot even try to change this. The Home button is there in the upper right corner of the screen but the Bookmarks is missing and moving the cursor to the right doesn’t restore it. I tried reinstalling it, but the behavior didn’t change. IE appears to work normally, but all my bookmarks are missing. Any thoughts?
