If we accept Ben’s story that the charges are baseless, then why would he feel the need to apologize to his teammates? If he did nothing, the woman’s decision to sue is completely out of his hands, and he really shouldn’t apologize. It’s like apologizing for the weather.
I’ve been trying to keep open-minded about the case, but this makes me wonder.
He could have just thrown money at her to settle out of court and keep the story out of the papers altogether. But noooooooooooo, Rapey Von Rapenstein just had to have his day in court.
ETA: Alternately, if he admits to sex but claims it’s concensual, (I have no idea what he claims,) he could be apologizing for being such a douche that she was pissed off enough to cry rape. What did he do? Thank her grandfather for picking his cotton shirt?
Apparently Big Ben senses this will become an issue that will hang over the Steelers’ heads through camp and into the season. And given the pandering nature of the msm (cite: the broadside hit Obama took at his recent press conference), it’s bound to be front-page fodder for most sports dailies.
I wonder if while he was raping her, he informed her of his broken toe, er, finger, and how he was running an 104 degree temperature and is just so manly and heroic, and that he was from a place called “Hope”?
Or maybe he just had John Madden standing nearby saying all that.
I understand that, but it’s at odds with what he’s claimed so far - which is that she’s completely lying, and the charges are baseless.
The only way apologizing makes sense is if the accusations have some basis in fact, and he did something (even consensual sex) to start the ball rolling. Otherwise he has zero responsibility for the distraction, and apologizing makes little sense, and looks bad to boot.
Put another way: “I didn’t do it! And, I’m sorry”.
Whether or not it’s his fault, it makes him a problem for the team, and he’s sorry for that. Maybe it helps if you think of it as an expression of sympathy toward the team. I’m with vinniepaz; this doesn’t strike me as unusual.
(taking no position on the facts of the matter, of course.)
I’d apologize. It’d be a headache for everyone else on the team that they wouldn’t have to deal with if I weren’t around. Basically, it’s “sorry that you’re going to have to deal with the negative externalities of my mess,” which is something to be embarrassed about even if the mess isn’t your fault.
So how does everyone think this will play out? Will it Kobe Bryant all over again where the accuser will just turn around and drop it after a bunch of damning evidence shows up? Or do you think Big Ben is a big rapist?
Being a Bengals fan, I’ll bash right along with you!
My biggest issue with him is the slobfest (that’s at least the equal of the hero worship levelled at Brett Farve “he looks like a kids in a sandlot out there!” “He’s just having fun” “he’s a gunslinger!”) that gets associated with him and the self-inflicted drama that Ben uses to trump it up.
You know, he’s “heroic” because he played through a broken toe in the AFC Champ game they lost (later revealed by Cowher to not be true).
He reveals pregame to a reporter that he has an 104 degree fever that he’s going to “heroically” play through (also not true).
Shit like that bugs me. Yeah he’s a winner, yeah he’s good…but he’s also a big fat drama queen.
Hell, I’m a die-hard Steelers fan and I’ll bash him for that stuff too. It’s all true, he’s a drama queen through and through. He’s also undoubtedly a douche but as long as he remains one of the best QBs in the game on third-downs I don’t care.
Leave James Harrison alone though if he makes the news, he’s just a big ol’ ball of mean.
