Why is the writer's strike so inevitable?

I haven’t paid much attention to the Hollywood writer’s strike, but I have noticed that folks in the biz have been talking about it like it’s an inevitable thing for almost a year now. Usually, when a strike is looming, both sides express public assurances that they’re working on a resolution (whether or not the strike is actually averted). Not so with Hollywood.

Do I just have the wrong perception from my limited exposure? Or is there a reason the writer’s strike seems as sure as Christmas this year?

The studios’ reps seem to be mouthing the sort of platitudes you’re expecting, even in the face of the authorization to strike:

Because the last time the writers were negotiating a contract, the union heads rolled over and played dead… which is why most of 'em got turfed during the most recent WGA election. Hollywood writers got sold down the river of very few returns on DVD sales in that contract, and they are pissed.
