I can offer all kinds of historical explanations for the origins of anti-semitism, but it’s a lot HARDER to explain why it’s still such a potent force today.
George Will explained the enigma aptly: in Europe, we see Christian anti-semitism without Christians or Jews!
That is, anti-semitism may have roots in Christianity (the whole “Christ killers” libel), but in modern Europe, Christianity is a spent force, a philosophy that no longer matters to many people. Yet, somehow, people who haven’t believed in Christ for ages still hate the Jews… very few of whom have even LIVED in Europe for ages.
Very stupid. Especially considering that, according to Christian doctrine, Jesus had to die in order to absolve Mankind of its sins. The Christians should be thanking the Jews for killing Jesus!
