I do have Adblock Plus and have it set to block ads on this site. The cookie icon is still there.
There is a feature, Block cookie consent pop-ups, but it is locked and will cost $40 a year to see if it works or not.
That’s an optional feature on mine, too, but it isn’t necessary for me. I have the free version of Adblock Plus (v4.39.1) and it blocks the cookie as is. You should be able to use the “Block Element” feature, though I don’t know why it should be necessary any more.
I did notice that it has a bunch of default filters, the most active of which are EasyList, EasyPrivacy, and Fanboy’s Social Blocking List. I didn’t install any of those, they came with Adblock by default.

Just for the record, I’m viewing the site via Chrome, running Ublock Origin Lite and Privacy Badger. No cookie icon for me.
But on mobile (Android), I get it both in the Adblock Browser and Chrome. Thankfully, I very rarely do more than just read the forum on those devices.

Okay, i was wondering what y’all were talking about. But the cookie just showed up on my phone this evening. Annoyingly, it mostly covers the “post” button.
I just had a look, and no, Discourse app runs off an API and renders its own content, rather than just being a shell around Safari (or Chrome, or…)*
I, for my sins, am incredibly familiar with GDPR requirements, having worked with clients who must comply.
GDPR can be handled in a much, much, more subtle manner than the obnoxious cookie icon. I have got in trouble for criticising Discourse on this board, so I will just point out that by complying with one law - GDPR - it is not compliant with the European Accessabilty Act, in that it blocks page functionality…
* occasionally, I get asked to add SMDB as a desktop icon - if this is used it will launch in your default browser.
Oh dear. I just went to a South African site, which had a similar “cookie” image, with a similar purpose (we have our own legislation around cookies) so perhaps the little cookie is spreading, like “hamburger menus” once did…
I had ad blockers on my desktop computer. Amazon fire tablets do not appear to have any easy way to install them. It uses the silk browser and has its own separate ap store which has no ad blockers.

Even though I cannot get rid of the cookie icon, I have to click on it for every device I have to complete the storage options.
I have several Amazon tablets and a cell phone. My desktop computer died a couple of months ago.
That’s not crazy. But couldn’t they… Have an option in the menu somewhere, instead of floating a cookie image over parts of the screen you want to use?
hmm, even on my much larger laptop screen this cookie image makes it hard to click the “reply” button. Honestly, this feels like a bug. Or at least, a feature that isn’t doing what it’s intended to do.

This page on the Discourse site, to which TroutMan linked above, explains how to
add the Osano cookie consent stuff to a Discourse web site. It says that there
is “an option to add a cookie widget that displays more details about the cookies.”

This seems to replace the more usual banner that would normally appear on
a website allowing a user to select and save cookie preferences.
Maybe @engineer_comp_geek could look into getting that switched off ?
Hopefully the usual consent banner would not be so … persistent.
For those using Safari on an iPhone (and I assume iPads?), there is a feature that can remove the cookie from an SDMB page permanently – at least until you clear your cache or log out of the message board. Slight hitch – it is a “page” level solution, not a site-wide solution. If you do it while reading THIS thread, every time you come back to this thread the cookie will be gone. But you will see the cookie while viewing other threads.
So far, I have disabled the cookie on the SDMB main page (the list of categories with descriptions), some of the subforum home pages (Factual Questions, P&E, etc,), and maybe 10-12 threads I visit often. Thankfully, the cookie is not so obtrusive for me even on the phone – my reply button is at the right – and even if it were at the left, Safari allows me to scroll down enough that I could bring an element covered by the cookie above the cookie if that makes sense.
So how’s it done? Use the “Hide Distracting Items” feature. If you’re not familiar with at feature in Safari, it’s worth a quick Googling and read-up on what it’s about. I’d leave instructions on how to use this feature, but it seems to differ wildly depending on iPhone model, and my iPhone is an old 2020 SE. Basically, if you already know how to use Safari’s Reading mode (not the exact name of the feature, but you get the gist), “Hide Distracting Items” should be clickable in the same general area you turn on Reading mode. If you can’t find “Hide Distracting Items” on your iPhone while in Safari, no matter how you try, it’s worth Googling or asking a techie friend/relative for help.
Anyway – open “Hide Distracting Items”. Once in that mode, click on the cookie. A blue rectangle surrounds the cookie. Click on the cookie again. The cookie disappears. Then click on the check box at upper left to lock in your preference for that page.
Your “Hide Distracting Items” may look differently depending on exact iPhone model. If none of this makes sense, Google it with your iPhone model name. Or ask for help in meatspace.
