I was gaming with a friend recently, while talking on the phone with him.
Me: “Dang, my power just went out.”
Him: “Well, are you still connected to the game server?”
Me: “My power went out.”
Him: "But is your internet still working?
Me: “My power went out.”
Yeah, it makes a difference.
I mean, in a better universe, your Internet gear could have been on an UPS. IME, it keeps working as long as it’s powered.
Is the cookie … gone … for the rest of you all [EDIT: the rest of you all on laptops laptops & desktops non-phone-or-tablet devices, that is]?
I did do that inspect/delete thing, but expected it to only work for whatever SDMB page I was looking at right then and there. I’ve been jumping around the SDMB a bit the last 45 minutes or so … and no cookie anywhere.
You know, we’re only human, and it’s easy to fall into negative reactions to the invasive cookie. But I would like to, instead, feel appreciation for all of the positive aspects, the benefits of the screen obscuring cookie, such as… um, like… uh, I’m sure there are good things about it. Must be.
I did it, too. I had to hit “delete” several times to get it to completely disappear and it has not returned.
I closed the tab through which I was perusing the SDMB (I tend to not open multiple SDMB tabs), then re-opened a new tab just now. Cookie’s back. I’ll deal with it forthwith – just offering a data point.
Hmmm, I think it was more like five DELETEs. I watched the cookie while I was clicking DELETE. The last thing remaining is a kind of a placeholder rectangle that lights up pale blue (Win 11 Chrome on laptop) – then you hit DELETE yet one more time, and rectangle is gone. And THAT’S the end of the cookie. For now.
Yeah, when deleting elements there’s always a placeholder within a placeholder before you finally exorcise the very spacetime that keeps respawning the thing you’re trying to remove.
So, it’s kind of like black mold, then.
Windows 11 on PC - it just appeared this morning after a re-boot.
Just in case it’s helpful to figuring this out.
Yeah, I left the site and when I returned, the cookie was back. But it is trivial to get rid of it for a session so I’m ok with that.
Decent bet what really happened is that some of Discourse’s scripts that are cached on your machine finally aged out and your browser fetched the new and improved version with the cookie monster included.
Or do you never close your browser between reboots? I’m somebody that routinely closes everything I’m not actively using. Other people are the opposite.
I’m somebody who routinely has 75 windows open until I’m forced to close them even though I “wasn’t finished with that yet . . .” 
I use a number of different browsers, but the one I routinely use for haunting the Dope is always open and tends to grow tabs like a spreading fungus! 
I have the cookie on my phone using duck duck go browser.
Never goes away on my sdmb tab
