As a leftist (read third-party supporter), my thoughts on these matters are generally unwelcome.
The rapidity of the “leftward” shift in the Overton Window in the next few years is likely to make the late-70s/early-80s rightward shift look like a zit on your wrist.
Sure there is. But you’d also need 12 rogue jurors. Even in Congress they couldn’t find enough evidence to try and impeach Biden–and they were really trying.
Among those 12 people, it statistically unlikely there won’t be anyone who supports Biden, just like it’s unlikely there won’t be any Trump supporters in the jury. If the prosecution can convince even the supporters that he’s guilty, that’s a pretty good sign he actually is.
It’s also not like this is happening in a vacuum. Much of the evidence that Trump is guilty is already public. This would not be the case with a rogue prosecutor.
And it’s not like an appeal is a new trial over the facts. It’s about correcting faults in the trial. Unless you have observed something that went wrong, you should tend to think that the original trial will stand. The vast majority do.
No, the reason many people say they’ll vote for Trump is that they like him. It’s a cult of personality. The rest is just finding a reason to think it’s okay to do so. Honestly, with the information we have now, a conviction shouldn’t even be necessary to prevent people from voting for him. Most other scandals that tanked candidates didn’t even involve any sort of trial.
The real issue is not that they think the trial is defective. It’s that a large portion of his base doesn’t care. Just like he said: he could shoot someone in broad daylight and not lose his followers.
