You know, I have slightly more sympathy now for those who disagree with people who say that we should’ve already prosecuted Wall Street figures for the financial collapse. I imagine that this is what those arguments must sound like to them.

The article appears to be behind a paywall, but let me guess: the first Justice Department official “spoke on condition of anonymity because he (she) (it) was not authorized to reveal information.” Which means the statement has about as much authenticity as something that was generated by a Ouija board.
(To be fair, that may apply to the second official’s statement as well.)
According. to CNN, Charles McCullough the Inspector General, stated they reviewed 40 emails and found 4 that contained classified information at the time they were sent. Additionally, McCullough said the State Department Freedom of Information Act officials told the IG that ‘there are potentially hundreds of classified e-mails’ that were sent.
4 is 10 percent of 40. So my guess is the ‘hundreds’ of emails will turn out to be 3,000 or so.
Additionally, Under Secretary of State Patrick Kennedy said at least one of the classified e-mail was released to the public.

In any sane world, this would disqualify Clinton instantly. Either Clinton lied about sending classified material, she didn’t know/understand the whole classified thing or she didn’t care.
However, we don’t live in a sane world. Ideology trumps all. So I expect lots and lots of justification in the near future.
This could also put Obama in a bind. At some point a serious, independent investigation needs to take place. Since Justice is Obama’s, Obama might have to toss Clinton under the bus or end up there himself.
It should get interesting.
The lack of good judgement by Clinton on this one is stunning. And yet there will be games played. The Ds will play it as no big deal while the Rs will play it to the hilt. And a all the while honesty, integrity and responsibility will become even more irrelevant.

Leak of classified information to unclassified networks is a huge deal. There’s still some excluded options like an error where stuff widely reported on is also contained in still classified documents.
While still in uniform, after the Manning leaks, we got told to not go to Wikileaks. That information was known around the world but it had not been declassified. Referencing it on an unclassified system would technically be a violation. Guess who was Secretary of State at the time? There’s room to fuck up and “spill” classified information by talking about a story on CNN in an email. There’s even potential for normal open source reporting to reveal classified data. If you aren’t aware of the classified document that piece of information is buried in and just talk about the news story in email… it’s technically spillage. It’s not necessarily any of the options you present though.
It’s potentially very serious. It deserves full investigation.
Or the e-mails were classified by the Kerry State Department after she released them, which seems to be what happened.
