I just watched a video for Snoop Dogg’s song “Sensual Seduction” (Youtube Link)(which is apparently a censored version of his original song “Sexual Eruption”, which I haven’t heard or seen). I really found that the this really brought Snoop into a new realm of my musical appreciation. To be fair, I don’t know much about Snoop Dogg except the more popular stuff, but this seems to really take him into a more interesting and progressive direction.
So, perhaps the to ask, is “Sensual Seduction” representative of the rest of the songs in his more recent works, or is it truly transcendent?
Wikipedia says it maxed out at #7 in the US. Why isn’t this song #1?
I was all ready to say, “uh, because it sucks donkey dick,” without having even heard it, but then I clicked on that YouTube link, and all I can say now is…wow, that song sucks donkey dick.
The lyrics are lame, and the beat sucks. It’s like a Mr. Show parody of a shitty song, fusing the worst of rap’s shitty lyrics with the worst of R&B and dance music’s shitty synths and beats and stupid vocal effects.
There are about a thousand songs that deserve to be number one more than this song. Actually, make that nine hundred thousand songs.
Of course, pretty much all the music on the “charts” is horrible, so going by those standards, I would say that this song should be number one.
The couple of times I’ve heard this on the radio I’ve switched over without even thinking. Having actually sat down and listened to the song, I’d still change stations just as quickly.
…but i liked the video clip. Tee hee.
Can someone explain what’s up with the plastic tube is coming out of his mouth?
I kinda like it. It’s like he decided to make a disco-funk-rap-song-about-gettin’-laid in 2008. The video definately has that 70’s vibe to it. I think it was probably a fun song to make and has a catchy hook.
I just listened to the billboard top 10, and made an angry degrading review of each of them, but luckily for you the browser crashed before I posted. Anyway I concluded that 6 of them got Snoop beat, with the strongest two being #6 and #9.
Looks more like a Talk Box tube. A Vocoder just uses a microphone, and usually modulates the voice with a second signal. The Talk Box puts the sound from an instrument into the performers mouth (via a speaker and tube), and the performer modulates the instrument with their mouth/tongue, and the result is picked up by the performers vocal mike. Different principles, although they may sound somewhat similar. The Talk Box is more organic, though. Listen to Peter Frampton “Do You Feel” live to hear the quintessential Talk Box solo.
Or it could be a Breath controller for the keytar, but they are usually a small cable to a mouthpiece.
There is vocal modification going on, and wikipedia suggests the use of vocoder and Autotune effects in the song, but that big tube just looks more like the Talk Box. It may just be a prop for the video :smack:
You’re right - I was being sloppy - I knew it was some kind of voice mod thing, but couldn’t be bothered to look it up, He sounds like Sparky’s Magic Piano, anyway.
Sparky’s Magic Piano was generated using a Sonovox, the predecessor of the Talk Box. So right sound, wrong specific effect. It’s a pretty common confusion.
Actually, with modern miniature loudspeaker drivers (think mobile phone speakers) and some waterproofing, you could make a Talk Box without the plastic tube, just a small cable, or maybe a bluetooth link. At least you would not look like you were smoking a hookah onstage, and maybe your teeth would have a better time, too.
Came in here to correct you on the title, but whaddya know? Sensual Seduction. Lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. Also, it sucks balls. But definitely check out Robyn’s new stuff (she’s supplying the female bits in the original). She is a fucking dynamo. Witness.
Wow, I remember Robyn being a one-hit wonder in the mid-to-late '90s with “Show Me Love,” right before Britney Spears exploded (with Robyn’s old producer Max Martin, no less). That was a silly little pop song, but Fergie and Pink WISH they could come out with such a GOOD, sassy, silly little pop song.
Well, technically they could hire different songwriters.
Anyway, I’d venture to say (to the OP) because I’ve still never seen or heard it outside of Youtube, and that was ramdomly linked to me by a family member. Of course, it’s not like I’ve really watched MTV since the 90’s or anything. Do they play any videos at all outside of 20 second clips on “TRL”?
Personally, I like it (even though I do think the lyrics are lame).
She’s got a ‘new’ album coming out in the US this spring (‘new’ because it’s all over Europe). Not a fan of her stuff from the '90s, I was pretty skeptical, but it’s actually got some great stuff on it. definitely worth a look, though it may only be big with electro-pop hipsters, gay clubbers and the like. Morestuff (and, as a special bonus, her live version of Prince’s Jack U Off).
