why no "Delicatessen" on DVD?

I know that when popular or critically acclaimed movies aren’t available on DVD, it’s usually due to some sort of esoteric licensing dispute.

Does anyone know why Jeunet’s “Delicatessen” isn’t available on DVD? I thought that with the massive success of “Amelie,” they’d finally release it. Its continued absence can only mean that there’s some sort of irritating red tape holding it up.

Anyone?

Hi jooky,
If you’re wanting to know why Delicatessen hasn’t been released yet in the US on DVD, I don’t know; however, I can tell you that it’s available in the UK - my roommate got his version (DVD) of it from Amazon UK. You would also need to have a DVD player that can play foreign discs, but they’re not prohibitively expensive, and if you’re into foreign movies, it’s worth it.

I don’t know either why Delicatessen hasn’t been released on DVD. I would, however, like to mention that back in about 1992 my band played a gig as the “opening band” for a screening of the film. Unfortunately, that’s all I have to contribute here.

I actually own a legal copy of it on DVD.
It is the European release though.

My husband and I saw a sneak preview of A Very Long Engagement (a very good film) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet was there to answer questions after the film. Someone asked him about a Delicatessen DVD and he said one was definitely in the works. He couldn’t give a date, he just said it’s coming.

This happened in Chicago? I just moved here, and would have loved to have heard that Jeunet was going to be in town! I joined Facets and everything to take part in stuff like that…oh well, at least I got to see Guy Maddin!

Yep, Chicago. I’m a member of Cinema Chicago, which puts on the Chicago International Film Festival every October. They sent me the passes for the A Very Long Engagement screening Dec. 6. They put on or are part of free screenings throughout the year. Not anywhere near as many as I’d like, but just enough to make it worthwhile being a member.

I don’t belong to Facets, do they have a lot of free screenings like that? Where/how’d you meet Guy Maddin? I love free screenings, but I’m not really that “in the know” about where to get them. I know the rock radio stations have givaways, but I don’t listen to the radio in Chicago, and won’t subject myself to crappy music just for movie tickets.

Welcome to Chicago! Where’d you move from? Chicago’s a wonderful place to be if you love seeing movies in the theater (well, if you have money and time, which we don’t always). We’re major movie buffs, for theater (we see 100-150+ movies a year in the theater) and home (home theater). It’s the best time of the year for movie buffs, and a great city to be one in, especially if you’re interested in seeing awards contenders, which I am. There are at least 10 more movies I’m planning on seeing in the theater before the end of the year. I’m such a geek.

Woo hoo! Delicatessen will be released on DVD on 2 May 2006.

How did I know that Johnny would be in this thread?!?

Wot? As if this thread is a Forbidden Zone?

I first saw this film at the cinema, and I loved it. A couple of months ago I loaned my VHS copy to a friend. He loved it. It’s a wonderful, funny, and touching film.

Wow, that’s great! Definitely my favorite Jeunet movie.

And sweet. And savory. And crunchy.
