So, so true
I feel compelled to point out that the Left was primarily protesting police shooting black men without justification. Some of these protests turned violent and destructive.
The Right was protesting that a national election didn’t turn out as they liked by storming the Capital building.
I’d say something a little different. The protest nearest me I saw was totally peaceful. The looting was about a mile away, in either direction, later. I’ve seen no evidence the protesters and the looters were the same people. Most of the Philadelphia looters may have been basically non-political criminals taking advantage of police being deployed elsewhere. So I don’t think the the left can be blamed for that.
By contrast, all the costs of what we now see are attributable to the right-wing protesters.
This isn’t to defend protesters. While I support the right to peacefully protest, someone telling me that they are extremely certain of the justice of their position doesn’t impress.
This is key. There have been violent protests throughout our history. You could argue some were justified, some not. The country, as a whole, survived them all. Even the Civil War wasn’t an attack on democracy itself. The South wasn’t trying to overthrow the existing government, “just” secede from it. What Trump and his ilk came perilously close to doing was undermining the whole system. The gutless, elected officials who won’t call it what it was (and is) are as much of a danger as Trump himself.
More of a danger, I’d say.
Contemplating whether to start a thread about who would be the worthy successor if Donny MangoFace croaked within, say, the next year or so, which would still allow a comfortable amount of time before Nov. '24 for the GOP to become one big sasquatch orgy of dogpiling, grandstanding, venal, clamouring, sweaty, cannabalistic, frenzied, bally-hooing muh-roons trying to sieze the podium and pronounce their fealty and more-fucking-GOP-than-you-are,-assholery to one another and over one another.
It would be a gross thread, replete with excursions into the worst bowels of the GOP, slopping through the putrid murk of trying to speculate who could be possibly be reprehensible enough to replace the Grossest Motherfucker in History, so, I’d probably deep dive with someone establishment like Cruz or Graham, as they deal with candirus up their urethrae in the form of a young, bright-eyed Josh Hawley and Crossfit-hurling Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Or possibly the courts don’t get it together in time, and we might be looking at a President Gaetz on Jan. 19, 2025.
Being someone from another country that dislikes all American politicians equally, I can’t not laugh at delusional posts like this:
" I believe the White Christian Nationalist movement which has taken over the Republican Party is entering their own modern day “Dark Ages”. I believe they have an unenlightened and repressive agenda at best! and are certainly behind the times as to understanding science and human rights."
I don’t know what’s worse here, the fact that some people think that “white” is a nationality (and not an…idk, race?) or the fact that they believe republicans are some sort of rightist extremists. Or that they degrade a whole race of people to a single color, because reffering to billions of people simply as “white” or “black” is supposedly normal.
Do you know when being transgender was taken of World Health Organization’s official disorder list?
During Oba…no, it was during Trump in 2019.
Do you know when absolutely nothing significant happened, no foreign wars, no economic catastrophes, etc?
During Trump.
Do you know when the biggest race riots like those in Ferguson and Charlotte were held?
Not during Trump, try earlier.
Do you know who constantly talks about “progressive” politics, yet gives one of the bloodiest dictatorships in the world, Saudi Arabia, all the weapons it could possibly want to repress it’s people?
Both democrats and republicans.
Google decided that it’s ok to separate business owners solely by their skin color and mark their shops on maps in the 21st century during Trump, plus to reffer to them as simply “black”, but I don’t see so called progressives being bothered about that, in fact you can still find those maps.
As for christianity, I am yet to see a single democrat say anything critical about some other religions followed by billions of people, plus christianity in America for the most part has nothing to do with christianity in Europe. We don’t have “tuesday god churches, westboro baptists” and other american inventions.
There is much to criticize about Warren Harding’s tenure, but I’m not sure how much blame he personally bears for the Tulsa Massacre.
The pandemic didn’t happen under Trump, nope. Nothing significant happened.
Who said “white” is a nationality? Please cite. I didn’t see any such claim in the post you cited.
This is an opinion call, but many of us believe that praising white supremacists as “good people”, attempting to overthrow an election by force (or downplay/excuse that attempt to overthrow an election by force), deliberate cruelty to migrant families, and other positions of Trump and the Republicans are extremist right positions. YMMV.
Cite for this?
The cause of the pandemic sure wasn’t Trump. It happened under Xi.
Stupid criminals are still criminals.
The failure to respond intelligently here in the United States was Trump’s fault.
It’s many people’s fault. Including Trump’s. However, it sure looked stupid to encourage mass gatherings during the middle of the pandemic when Trump tried to shut down international travel. It also was stupid to encourage mass protests during a pandemic.
You’re right. I didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020. You didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020. Joe Biden and Barack Obama didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020. George Bush and Mitt Romney didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020. Alec Baldwin and Michael Moore didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020. Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020. And Donald Trump didn’t issue the appropriate executive orders in 2020.
But Donald Trump is the only person who was President of the United States in 2020. So he is responsible for not doing the President’s job while the rest of us all get a pass.
Donald Trump failed to lead the country during a major national crisis. That’s his legacy.
You should have sent a memo to the cops to stop killing black people then.
And when the economy tanks it’s not the fault of whoever is the President either. I was just pointing out how absurd that someone would suggest that “absolutely nothing significant happened” during Trump’s presidency. It’s not just absurd, it’s insane.
The economy took a major nosedive as well during the last year of his presidency, due to the pandemic. So, if a person wants to judge the PUSA by whether or not he presides over an economic collapse (I usually don’t, no single person or group controls the economy) then Trump doesn’t get perfect marks there.
And as others pointed out, Trump’s response to the pandemic was pathetic. He lied about it initially (and even admitted it), intentionally downplaying it. He tried to turn the state governors into his lapdogs, trying to get them to beg him for aid in fighting the pandemic and threatening to not help people he doesn’t like. He spread misinformation about quack remedies and was constantly at odds with medical experts in giving bad advice about it. And most importantly, he politicized public safety. His efforts to make this a Democrat/Republican issue was monstrous, and we are still feeling the effects today. He had an opportunity to do what George W. Bush did after 9/11 and try for a bipartisan reaction to a major crisis. It would have been really good for him politically, and he probably would have won reelection on the tails of that. But he was too petty to bring himself to do that.
In any case, you completely missed my point. JakeRS’s screed was full of ridiculous misinformation, and I wanted to refute what seemed to be the most egregious statement in his post.
Cops kill people of every color and people kill people of every color. Have you looked at the violent crime statistics?
Policing plays a key role in maintaining structural inequalities between people of color and white people in the United States . Black women and men and American Indian and Alaska Native women and men are significantly more likely than white women and men to be killed by police.
Okay, you are free to send them a memo to stop killing everyone, if you want.
