I was shocked (SHOCKED!) at the over-reaction of Lynn Bodoni in locking this thread in ATMB. And shit.
Would it not have been appropriate to move the thread to MPSIMS? And shit?
Based on a recent thread in ATMB, there seemed to be a few posters who find this posting style a pleasant, welcome break from the mundane posting style of most SDMB posters. And shit.
I think you should reconsider unlocking this thread and just moving it to the proper forum. And shit.
I think you should should consider opening a new thread in the right forum, if you’re so attached to the topic of the old thread. After all, Ms Bodoni was the only person to respond, so it’s not as if there as a wonderful debate already in progress in the locked thread.
If it had been posted to MPSIMS I would have locked it. That’s what we do with drunk threads, especially if the poster is having a problem and is likely to regret the posting later on.
(P.s. if you do so could you spin off some of the posts here not referencing it, as I think it would be good to have a discussion on whether it should be a new unofficial policy)
We almost never delete threads. We will occasionally move something to the mod forum if someone starts a thread that could cause truly significant problems in his or her life (e.g., bitching about a spouse in the middle of an ugly divorce), but even that happens very, very infrequently.
It was a drunken post in the wrong forum, and had no replies. Sounds like a good candidate for deletion if there ever was one. Of course, now that this thread was started, it’s too late now.
If I had made it, I would have requested for it to be locked when I woke up sober and saw what I had done. I think the reason was pretty self-explanatory.
It’s not a matter of effort – it’s a matter of the culture of the boards. This is a place where people, in general, are expected to deal with the consequences of what they post – no revisionism, no do-overs. (And my god, if people think the mods are high-handed now, imagine the outcry if we regularly disappeared threads!)
The question is “why delete it,” not “why not delete it.” The mods need a strong, persuasive reason to delete a thread (or move it out of public view).
A bit of drunken stupidity isn’t a strong, persuasive reason.
In my experience, people who start threads like that are likely to wake up the next morning with a pounding headache, a mouth that tastes like a used catbox, and a sick feeling about just WHAT they posted last night. I can only help with the last thing. Most posters are damned grateful if I can manage to lock their drunken threads before too much damage is done.
You may close this thread. You can even delete it. I started my thread as a tongue-in-cheek question, not expecting to have anyone actually take it seriously. I believed that those that regularly read this forum would have picked up my obvious sarcasm, and understand what I was doing.
I regret having anyone actually wasting their time to formulate a response. Your time is more valuable than that.
