The majority of Americans are evil, stupid, ignorant and irrational, so they elected somebody who is evil, stupid, ignorant and irrational because that’s exactly what they wanted. Kalama lost because she was insufficiently stupid, incompetent and vile to please Americans.
As well as being guilty of being a woman, which as far as most Americans are concerned means she’s supposed to spend her life being constantly raped, beaten and forced to bear her rapist’s children; not put in a position of authority or permitted an instant of happiness.
It doesn’t matter how many times Harris expressed support for trans rights, because a lot of voters will see “The Democrats” as a monolith. So, if Dems are supporting trans rights, and trans athletes in womens sports, then Harris is. Even if they’re just perceived as doing so, Harris is.
Also, an awful lot of people are at best ignorant and at worst stupid. Nuance has no place with them. Biden is president, we have inflation, Biden made inflation. Over on Breitbart, there’s a common view that we’re entitled to sub $2 gasoline. If it’s more than that people freak out and say it’s because Biden doesn’t let producers produce. They have no idea that oil & gas output rose to record levels under Biden. Or that US production requires oil prices around $65 or better to be feasible.
And yes, of course, immigration. And while I personally support immigration, it isn’t unreasonable for people to want controls and limits. Especially when there is a severe housing shortage. Which, I know, isn’t actually caused by immigrants. But see the part about people being ignorant/stupid above. Here in MA I knew some MAGA who were incensed that we were putting immigrants in hotels at taxpayer expense while their 30 year old kids couldn’t afford to move out. Just try and counter that narrative.
The volcanic energy of Trumps’ words create cracks in the space time continuum. Discontinuities that are filled by the magma of MAGA reality.
Trump didn’t win the election - Trump became the Presidency. There were none before him and there will be none after. Trump shall both alpha and omega be.
I was talking about the years leading up to Trump. We should have shut this down with Reagan and Gingrich.Every time we said “let not talk politics,” every time we didn’t call out our racist uncles because we didn’t want to ruin Thanksgiving, we were doing Trump’s advance work. America collapsed because its ruling class didn’t do anything to protect it.
I don’t disagree with that but it’s more than just ‘racist uncles’. There are large swaths of the voting public—not all of the racist, and many of them of ‘black and brown’ demographics—who voted for Trump for a multitude of different reasons but all centered around various grievances.
I think the ‘ruling class’ believes that they know exactly what they are doing, which is to say maximizing profit and minimizing their tax burdens. That they don’t understand that there is a point where economics will run into physical resource limitations and planetary boundaries, as well as the pent up social angst of people who are becoming well aware of just how they are being screwed, is a different issue but there is a reason that the wealthiest people on the planet were vying like debutants at the ball to be the first to kiss Trump’s ring.
By ruling class, I don’t mean the oligarchs, I mean whites who’ve been voting for this for decades. They’d rather see America die than share power. They pulled the ladder up behind them poured gasoline on us and lit a match.
Working class “whites who’ve been voting for this for decades” are not the ‘“ruling class”. It is increasingly clear to them that they don’t rule jack shit, which is what they are so pissed about. That many of them are so willing to scapegoat others to feed into manufactured ‘culture wars’ angst about DEI, trans high school athletes, et cetera is just a consequence of how malleable their anger is.
Most of which are a mix of imaginary and racist, or the fault of the people they voted for.
And yes, many of those “black and brown” people voted for Trump out of racism. They just self-deluded themselves that the racist agenda he’d push would be their racist agenda, rather than his.
Rohin Francis, a British cardiologist, just released a video on his “Medlife Crisis” channel with a very cogent and perceptive analysis of how medical quackery dovetailed so neatly with the MAGA worldview. It’s well worth watching, and the rest of his videos are too:
This may be true, but there are always people who are frightened, economically insecure, and angry who are easily captured by the right when there is no clear, grassroots (that is, accessible and democratic) left alternative. The Democrats are not usually that alternative, and the hectoring technocratic vision many of them offer is nasty enough for people to hope a “leader” will cut through the crap and deliver…something.
“OMG no, you’re making fun of it!!! You can’t make fun of THAT!!! Laughing shit off is why we have Trump! We should have aggressively made it clear how awful everything will be and be proving with geometric precision how wrong everyone else was!”
