Perhaps that’s why the Indian sidekick of El Llanero Solitario is named “Toro” (“Bull”) in the Spanish version of the series - to avoid copyright problems.
It may be worth mentioning that in Spanish pato (“duck”) is also a derogatary word for homosexual.

Trust me, plenty of 8 year olds would know how to write such a word, and that it meant bad things. In the second grade, my friend whose parents were from Japan taught me a few Japanese words with less than PG meanings. I was quite surprised when my mom washed my mouth out with soap for using one of them in her hearing; seems she had been talking to my friend’s mom, who had mentioned the problem she had been having with Jim and his use of bad words. :smack:
I think it depends. In Mexico, “Goofy” was called Tribilin.
But I believe it is only used that way (slang) in the Caribbean, specifically Puerto Rico. AFAIK, in Mexico, we don’t use as a slang term for gays.
FWIW, in Latin America, one four-letter word is another country’s G rated word. For example, in Mexico, pendejo is a strong word that equals “you stupid f***!”, but in Colombia, it’s like calling someone “idiot!.”

Interesting, I wasn’t aware of the regional variation. I’ve seen it used in Puerto Rican neighborhoods in New York, but don’t recall hearing it here in Panama.
Quite so. “Coger”(to catch) is OK in Spain and in Panama, but can mean to f**k" in Argentina. Likewise “chucha,” whose dictionary definition is “bitch” (female dog), means “body odor” in Colombia but is a very crude word for “pussy” in Panama and other countries - which can be amusing when Colombians here say they think they might have chucha.
Awwwww! I came in to say roughly the same thing, only mine would have been “Put on your old gray bonnet” and then some little old lady would come out and bop whoever it was in the head with a broom.

Actually, as I’m sure Colibri knows, Tonto is called Toro because “tonto” means “fool” or “stupid” in Spanish. I don’t know if the original writer of TLR knew it and was just insulting Indians for the fun of it or what.

There is also a geological stratum in the Grand Canyon called the Tonto Group. It’s conceivable that one of the scriptwriters might have heard of this, and not knowing its meaning in Spanish decided it would be a good name for an Indian.
I recall the Tonto Rim from somewhere.
As for Tonto being a fool, I can offer an example from one of the radio shows.
Lone and Tonto are sitting around the campfire discussing some event that recently happened and Tonto explains that he can’t quite remember the name of the bad guy involved. It’s like on the tip of his tongue.
Time passes. Lone utters something like “I’m going to find them no matter how long it takes.”
Tonto says, “Unnnh, Kemo Sabe. Now Tonto remember man’s name. Tex.”
I was maybe 10 at the time and said the equivalent of “Bullshit!” out loud to the radio. After that, when I learned that Tonto meant fool, I was not surprised.
So if “tonto” means “fool” then Weird Al was being redundant in “Taco Grande” when he had Cheech Marin (playing the part of a Mexican waiter) call the diner a “gringo estupido tonto”? Strangely, I usually find this translated “you really stupid gringo”.

I can’t remember if it was on *Airplane * or in *Hot Shots * that this one idiotic character had a cap that read “JAFO”. We couldn’t quite figure what it was meant to mean or why it was supposed to be funny. Then it occurred to us that it might have meant to say “GAFO”. meaning “goofy” or fool. Does anyone remember the movie? What was it supposed to mean?
If it was indeed JAFO, my guess would be Jive Ass Fuck Off, but my memory has JAMF, which is the slightly more aggressive Jive Ass Mother Fucker. Then there’s the JATO thing where the Chevy had a Jet Assisted Take Off and managed to hit 300 before plowing into a canyon wall – old Urban Legend joke sort of thing.
And then there was Jaco Pastorius who played a mean jazz bass – for a while.
Maybe the person writing it really was Filipino, in which case they were accusing you (or your car) of being a tasty rice cake.
The movie I remember it from was Blue Thunder. In that movie it stood for Just Another Fucking Observer, i.e. the secondary/non-pilot guy in the chopper.
From what I can see, in military slang it’s Just Another Fucking Officer.
