Will Melania Trump's pro-choice stance be a factor in the election?

If he wins, I’m not sure she will even go to DC with him. Why should she? Norms and traditions have been discarded. She didn’t play the traditional politician’s spouse during the campaign and no one seemed to care. Maybe she would show up for a state dinner or two (for a price).

The only reason she is publicly talking now is to sell her book. Saying provocative things gets her attention and helps with that. It’s all about her, and Donald profiting from it in some way is immaterial. I suppose there are some people who are her fans rather than his and could be persuaded to vote one way or another by her statements but they are much fewer than the ones who are locked in for Trump and don’t care what she says.

You’re assuming she actually wrote a word of that book.

I doubt she’s ever concerned herself with fact of an unplanned pregnancy, having to make a choice of a rock and a hard place.

She asked CNN for 6 figure payout to do an interview about her book. Who does that?

Lol, really? We are still bringing this kind of thing up?

Yeah if we were taking about a regular GOP candidate at any point before 2016. Then, yes a candidate’s wife coming out as pro-choice would be a huge deal.

But those days are gone. The norms hold the Republic together have been stomped in the dirt. After admitting to habitually carrying out sexual assault, the rape verdict, the felony conviction, the coup attempt, stealing highly classified documents, etc. etc. etc, this barely registers.

Hell she’d need to come out as pro baby cannibalism to even make the front page

Trump is a 3-time GOP nominee while personally using eminent domain to enrich himself, strongly opposing trade and the free movement of goods and peoples, and probably supporting abortion rights personally or having no opinion other than what supports his personal branding/marketing. I think it’s been known he’s free of ideology or values for at least 9 years, but apparently so is the Republican Party. I mean these are the people who call pure standard conservatives 'RINOS" while not holding any traditionally Republican economic or social positions.

Didn’t Gerald and Betty Ford have this same conflict?

I think all the Republican First Ladies since Betty Ford have been pro-choice. Betty Ford was the only one to be public about it while her husband was president.

I’ll give her some credit for not toeing the MAGA line. Other than that, I have no interest in what she says. Unless she says “Moose and squirrel”. I’d like to hear her say that.

Not to mention that Roe v Wade was a Republican-majority decision.

The Republican party is, traditionally, the party of freedom from government intervention into our personal lives, and that’s precisely the reasoning of Roe v Wade.

She wouldn’t say that, she’s not badenov.

I wasn’t sure there were enough people old enough to get that.

This contradiction has always bothered me. You can choose not to get a vaccine during a pandemic since “your body, your choice”, when getting that vaccine would benefit others, but…

How about we apply this concept to women who aren’t married to you?

I’d like to hear her say “shut up your mouth”.

Every word out of her mouth is scripted, taught and controlled. She is not believable in any way.

A puppet.

Well done, the both of youse.

I’m ashamed to admit how old I was before I “got” the badenov/gudunov wordplay.

Or another Trump alternative - attack the questioner. “That was a nasty question. So nasty. Such a nasty - my wife is great, she’s beautiful - person, you’re a nasty person, Melania, she’s, everybody loves Melania - you saw how beautiful she is, no wife has been so beautiful in the history of our country.”

Roe V. Wade was also a fairly new decision during the Ford administration.
