Will the pro amnesty and sanctuary city movements hurt democrats?

A couple things:

[li]This type of generalization, right wingers, left wingers, etc. is hardly ever a part of productive discourse. No more of this in this thread.[/li][li]There are plenty of threads about gun related topics. This one is about sanctuary cities. No more about guns in this thread unless it’s specifically related to sanctuary cities or immigration in some concrete way. Proceed with this hijack at your own risk.[/li][/ol]

If you have a family member hurt by a Mexican (An illegal? I bet you don’t call Cliven Bundy an illegal.) and you are angry and you want to punish every Mexican, then you’re definitely heading towards white nationalism.

Understood. Sorry.

I’m not sure.

On one hand, no, I can see how local police would want to focus on local crimes. Having the trust of persons in the illegal community who will come forward and tell police about the bad elements in their groups is an aid. But I also think they should be turning in information to ICE for anyone they might have suspicion on being an illegal because who knows? Maybe they are wanted for crimes committed elsewhere or have been deported before and came back? Police when they book someone take fingerprints and such and that information should be shared with ICE.

But yes, you are right that ICE needs to its job and be there the day someone leaves jail to take them away or to come in and question any suspects a city police might have.

Rememberthe case in San Fransisco where the illegal shot and killed a woman? It was sanctuary city policies and an attitude of harboring illegals that allowed him to stay and this crime to happen. Thank you democrats!

An illegal what?

He’s not going to get it because he’s deliberately not getting it.

ICE is free to check agency databases to look for people who are “wanted for crimes committed elsewhere,” just like every other law enforcement agency does. But why should ICE have special treatment? Should local law enforcement tell the FBI about everyone they’ve arrested? The Marshals Service? The Marine Corps Security Division? The SEC?

No, it just makes you irrational. “Illegals,” as you so charmingly - if ungrammatically - call them, are less likely to commit crimes than citizens.

It was an illegal gun that was fired. The undocumented immigrant saw it on a bench, picked it up, and it went off, ricocheting off the ground and tragically fatally wounding the woman.

He should have been much more careful, but Urbanredneck implies that it was murder or something like that. It is the sort of thing that could have happened to a native born american citizen as well. The way he worded his post, it is meant to imply that if we were better at deporting undocumented immigrants, then tragedies like this wouldn’t happen, but the facts plainly show that that is not remotely true.

Unless you can identify some unique characteristic of undocumented immigrants that makes them more likely to be a threat to you than your average american citizen, stories like that are just meant to gin up fear and hatred of “the other”. Just implying that that characteristic exists, even though all evidence is to the contrary, is racism.

You’re missing a step here … when local police arrest and jail an individual, they check for any other warrants for arrest … if they find one, they notify the issuing agency and will hold the suspect until that other agency gets the court’s permission to come get him …

ICE doesn’t issue warrants … they pick up the name from the public domain and contact the local police with a hold request … however holding someone without a warrant is strictly illegal … relying on a phone call from some bozo in Arizona is going to get that police officer fired …

HAHAHAHAHAHA

That fella in San Francisco was acquitted

Okay, that’s fair.

Going a little bit further, what do you think of Joe Arpaio’s policies of enforcing immigration laws, that included arbitrary stops of Hispanic-looking people just to see if they were here illegally?

It shows your political stripes that you consider that murder to be an immigration problem, as opposed to a gun problem. Thanks NRA!

(Keep in mind that I have already agreed that violent offenders ought to deported, not simply released back into society.)

You misspelled “gloating.”

[underline mine]

Not to be pedantic, but a giant and important nit on that to pick.

Not a murder.

Homicide, then.

No need for rolleyes, it is actually a fact that he was not convicted of murder, nor manslaughter. Calling it murder furthers the attempts to create a stereotype of the dangerous “illegal.”

It was a tragedy, but not a murder.

Yeah, neither was OJ.

The Bundys are free now …

And, if you are wanting to use OJ as an example of why we should sanction football players or actors that were in naked gun or some other aspect of OJ’s past or demographic because of his actions, then calling him a murderer plays into people’s emotions there as well.

Err…honest question:

Do you realize that the article you linked to says the “illegal” accused of murdering that woman was found not guilty? I mean…you don’t have to read far. It says so in the title: “Shooting of Kathryn Steinle: San Francisco pier killing suspect found not guilty of murder” :smack:

You’re saying that the police should be stopping random people on the streets and checking them because they may have committed a crime?

I’m guessing the point is you’re not really thinking it should be happening to random people. I’m sure you don’t think the police should be doing that to people who look like you. The police should be grabbing people who look like them.

It doesn’t matter, it became a rallying cry during the campaign, and it’s not likely they will back down now, just because he was found not guilty. Even Ravenman casts rolleyes towards the result of the trial, I suppose, since OJ got off, and he “definitely did it”, anyone else who is found innocent by a court of law is actually guilty as well.

It shows that “illegals” are just murderers who will randomly and callously kill you dead while you are minding your own business with your father. It was a “this could happen to you” story, and as such, the actual details don’t matter, except for the immigration status of the defendant.
