I came in here hoping it would be something profound on the subject of replicated dates.
Well, there’s no reason it can’t be. What’s a replicated date? I’ll try to be profound if you’ll explain the concept. That’s all it takes.
A replicated date (I may, in fact, have the wrong term) is a date with repeated digits. Such as 8/8.
There’s another term (isn’t there?) for other patterns in date representation, such as 1/23/4
or 12/3/45
or also times, such as
12:34:56 pm (better when it was July 8, 1990, to wit: 12:34:56 7/8/90)
Number patterns make me happy.
How does this work?
I’m in Tokyo right now and it’s going to be Monday 8/8 in just a little over 5 hours.
Does that count?
I’d say it counts for you if you notice a distinct shift in tone or (more importantly) a change in the cast of character posting at SDMB. My theory behind the OP was/is that except for a handfull of round-the-clock 24/7 addicts like me, the vast majority of people who post, and thus keep “amusing” threads rolling along, are split into a Weekday Crowd (Monday 8-9 AM thru Friday 4-6 PM) and a Weekend Crowd (primarily daylight Saturday and Sunday). That would vary, of course, by time zone and around the world.
Have you ever suspected a pattern like this in your zone?
I’ve been tempted to select a few of the more prodigious posters, the 4-digit category (or the Comma Crowd) and make note of their posting times to see if there’s any validity to the theory. But I consider such O/C behavior a little extreme for something it’s easier just so speculate about and ask if others notice the same sort of thing.
Okay, Feydeau, I had a hunch this might be what you meant. Would it count if I said I have a photo my wife took of me next to the TV with the Weather Channel on (so we could see when the clock hit the number) and with me holding up a little sign that had 7/8/90 on it, and she snapped the picture at 12:34:56. I have misplaced the picture, and it kinda blurry anyway, but we were in the spirit of it all. We had missed the earlier one at 01:23:45 on June 7, 89.
But I put the specific date of 8/8/05 just to keep the OP from looking like it applied to all Mondays. Just making it to Monday (tomorrow for me) was a stretch for something with no more content than this has so far.
Okay, so maybe “profound” wasn’t what I meant. Maybe verbose?
My wife and I are the same way. It makes her unreasonably happy to know that the day she realized she was in love with me was 8/8/88.
Our wedding anniversary is 8/16. Interestingly, 8/16/24 will be our 32nd wedding anniversary!
You must have a party that day with 40 guests and play “Name The Capitals” of the Lower 48.
11:11 always causes us to say so (if we notice) and we met another couple who have the same fascination (not that everybody else alive today doesn’t) with that time. For several years (they live in Louisiana) and usually at night one or the other of us would call the other at 11:11 (23:11 for the picky types) on Nov/11 and say “Eleven eleven.”
I’ve noticed that the place is slower on the weekends (posting-wise, not hamsters-wise … I don’t remember the last time I had a problem with the hamsters), but haven’t noticed any trends regarding which topics get more play on the weekends v. during the week.
This thread was started on Friday morning (in my timezone), and I’ve been more-or-less camped out on the SDMB since Friday night (this being an “I’m not even leaving the house to get the mail” weekend), but I didn’t see it until just now. For some reason it amuses me that a weekend post about weekends being different than weekdays around here didn’t get noticed by someone who’s been here all weekend until the weekend was almost over. But then, this weekend I’ve been more easily amused than usual.
Heh!
In light of Anaamika’s backhanded compliment, I just want to clarify that nothing is implied by the fact that I expressed happiness at your comment immediately after saying that I seem to be more easily amused than usual these days. I would have expressed happiness at your comment even if I were feeling very grumpy this weekend, because references to Schrödinger’s cat always impress me and make me happy. Oh, and congrats on the custody thing!
My birthday is 6/11/66 which is great because 6 x 11 = 66.
About 10 years ago I dated a guy and his birthday was 8/8/64 (8 x 8 = 64).
I was writing bills today, to be mailed tomorrow and realized, Happy Birthday Steve, you insane ex-boyfriend, you.
Was it the title that made you skip it?
I have also spent way too much time here this weekend. I was up till 3 or 4 this morning after spending most of yesterday here, too. Lots of fun, all in all, but I’m really missing one of those “go crazy” threads that only seem to come along when nobody’s expecting them. One silly remark will spawn hundreds and every cliche’ in the SDMB lexicon will be dragged out and modified.
Any idea what triggers those?
Nothing too weird about it, but my oldest kids’ birthdays are 7/2/64 and 1/20/66.
You doesn’t has to call me Daddy.
In my family, we call a monthly celebration a mensaversary – after the Latin for “month.”
Not only a geek, but of a family of geeks.
I guess you can see how that could be taken at least three ways?
Feminist geeks.
For the monthly recurrence of a date marking a notable event, I think I like Zeldar’s “luniversary” suggestion best so far. A Google search on that word gets about 187 results!
It’s not that I skipped it, it’s that I didn’t see it. If I’d noticed this thread earlier in the weekend, I’d have clicked on it then. It’s rare for me to skip a thread and then later decide to check it out.
Collective hallucinations?
No idea. Maybe if we wait twenty minutes, Mariana will tell us.
You know, I really like that notion. I can accept the Collective Unconscious and the Zeitgeist as overarching concepts to explain mass behavior, so there has to be something that works like tides or economic cycles and the hallucinations thing has appeal as well for how stupid movies seem to come in bunches and then fade away as quickly.
God, I’d wish they’d get done with the cartoons versus toys kick they’re on now.
I was going to mention that my birthday is 08/08/1963…
…but maybe I’ll skip it.
Is that the one from the trench? Are we in for some trench warfare, now?
