Whoo hoo! That’s ONE! The floodgate has been opened.
I think there might be a lot of this in the end…people who hold their nose and vote for Hillary in an effort to save America. Clearly, Donald Trump is unable to refrain from kneecapping himself. At some point I think the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back is going to land. It may have landed already with this Khan thing.
This isn’t going to move the needle significantly. It’s certainly not going to affect Trump’s base of racists and Islamophobes. They will support Trump more because of this.
The people who still support him because of the Supreme Court, or because they think he’ll dismantle Obamacare, or whatever, have already been willing to put up with Trump being a terrible human being. There’s likely nothing he can do or say–short of changing his policies–that will push them off. That’s why you won’t see people like Speaker Ryan or Senator McCain withdraw their endorsements.
So who does that leave? Some mythical person who is high-information enough to follow this whole controversy, who is sufficiently heterodox that they like Trump but might not consider voting for him, and for whom this is the last straw? I doubt such a person exists, and if he does, that there are many like him. I suspect some people will use this moment to officially announce that they are (former) Republican and won’t be voting for Trump, but I very much doubt that they weren’t planning to do so before this.
And another one for the list.
I think it’s indicative of an image problem that might sink Trump. He’s trying to portray himself as the champion of the little people against the establishment. But the reality is Trump has always been willing to step on any little people who annoy him; Trump is part of the establishment that his supporters are unhappy with. Some of Trump’s supporters are going to read about people like David and Moira Milne or Michael Forbes and realize Trump’s true attitudes towards people like them.
Are you saying the Kahns represent radical Islam?
To Omg a Black Conservative: I’m guessing you overlooked my question to you, so I’ll bump it up.
What is your PERSONAL reaction to Trump’s remarks directed at the Khan family? You’ve posted headlines and commented on media bias, but what was your reaction to Trump’s comments.
I’m actually surprised Trump hasn’t said “I prefer heroes who are smart enough to stay alive. Walking towards a truck that he suspected had a bomb in it. Dumb. Very dumb.”
Anyway, again, a third of Trump’s supporters believe Clinton is literally in Lucifer’s employ. Just sayin’
That said whether or not Trump will get White non-college educated men who support him in polls off their arses to vote is a large part of the question. The net effect of all of his shit won’t get them to flip, but it may keep them from being enthused enough to vote instead of something else pressing they had to do that day. Voting is waking up early to do it before work or being home late for dinner … too much work after all.
Only if there’s an appreciable number who liked Trump yesterday, don’t identify with those attitudes anyway (regardless of what they imply in practical terms), and don’t have anything else that’s much more important to them that made them Trump fans in the first place.
I think ultimately the election is just a referendum on what Americans have been thinking about each other all along. We’ve always known there were Trumps among us; the question now is how many.
Actually, it doesn’t. Directly in the face of another Twitter attack from Trump, Mr. Khan beautifully eviscerated the logical foundation of that line of reasoning in his remarks this morning. Indeed, he stated the Muslim community shares Trump’s security concerns over terrorism and pleaded for engagement with his community to deal with the threat.
I keep seeing this sort of thing and want to make a point.
All of the available air time in the potential swing states is - I’d bet anything - already purchased or optioned. It was bought by various groups/campaigns months ago. So the idea of being able to buy TV spots in the next few months is a fallacy.
During my campaign in 2010 - a local race - I couldn’t arrange for TV after June because we had several state and national races that had arranged to buy all the airtime available. I could only get two weeks worth during the 5:30AM morning show time slot in September.
I have a feeling a SuperPAC with millions of dollars to spend just might get to talk to a different guy in the ad sales department than a local race candidate.
Said McCain:" I challenge the nominee to set the example for what our country can and should represent."
Let us know how that works out for you.
Actually, I heard an interview with him yesterday (on one of the NPR shows, I think), and he said yes, he does habitually carry around that copy of the constitution in his coat pocket. He said he wasn’t originally planning to say that in his speech, but when he grabbed his jacket to put it on to go to the convention center he felt it in there and that’s what inspired him to pull it out.
We can only hope, if this were indeed a just universe. However:
Just look at the latest PPP poll. Three-quarters of Trump voters say Hillary should be in prison. Two-thirds say she’s a bigger threat to the United States than Russia. Almost two-thirds say they think, or are unsure, that Hillary is working hand-in-hand with Lucifer himself.
You’re never going to make those voters switch to Clinton, even if some of them end up not being able to vote for Trump. I don’t think we’re going to get a landslide of historic proportions, unfortunately.
But this ignores the point Jonathon Chance was making - if a block of air-time is already sold it can’t be sold again, not even to a SuperPAC with millions of dollars.
There’s an known unknown here. And that is that recent events seem to suggest that “airtime” ain’t what it used to be. Witness, when the Pubbie Establishment spent 40 Godzillabucks to bump Jeb(!) just a couple of points in New Hampshire and got…zero, zip, zilch, nada damn thing!
You can get someone who agrees that your idea will work to sell his time to you.
“Election ad futures”.
Indeed. I don’t know why people try to explain whats happening by suggesting that Trump supporters are actually secret anarchists or some other reasoning that gives people far more credit than they deserve.
America appears to have millions and millions of people not only preparing to vote for Trump but actively convincing themselves that its the right thing to do. They have embraced ignorance and absolutely no event, fact or explanation can change their thinking.
There is no third level deep thinking long game going on here, its simply that a very large number of Americans are fucking idiots. Don’t blame Trump or Clinton for whats happening, look a little closer to home.
But how many? I’ve sorta settled on about 20%, rough guesstimate. But really, who knows?
