Win98 registry and IE5.0 question

I hate the URL History feature in IE5x. I’ve tried setting the “Days to keep pages in history” to 0, but a)it doesn’t work, and even then, b) it’d still be giving me url suggestions until I rebooted.

I remember reading about a fix for this that involved editing the registry. I’ve skimmed through the registry and can’t find amything specific. Does anyone know how to turn the stupid thing off or know the correct registry key to change?

Thanks,

Fenris

Do this:

  1. Click on “Tools” and choose “Internet Options…” at the bottom.

  2. Click on the “Content” tab.

  3. In the “Personal Information” section, click on “AutoComplete…”

  4. Uncheck the box next to “Web addresses” (and boxes for any other option you don’t want it to offer suggestions for).

  5. Click any buttons in the “Clear AutoComplete History” that you want to clear.

  6. Click “Okay” in the “AutoComplete Settings” window, then click “Okay” in the “Internet Options” window.

I solved the problem with a utility called TweakUI, which either came from the Microsoft downloads site, or a similar tool from WinFiles.com or Tucows.com

Anyway, it has a “Paranoia” tab with lots of switches. I insist on it at home. My sons (older now than I was when I got married) were apologizing every day for having hit a “teaser” link in e-mail spam that left http://www.HotLicks.com or some such on the browser bar. They don’t know I fall for the same gimmicks myself, when the come-on just says “save money on phone bills”, but it means sex lines. There’s some things even family members shouldn’t know about you, and where you surf is one of them.

Three solutions:

Firstly, what annalamerino said. There are two Windows utility packages out there (TweakUI and TweakAll) which include settings to delete history files on shutdown. I believe that one of them is part of the Windows 98 Resource Kit, which is on the Windows 98 CD-ROM but is not automatically installed.

Secondly, simply use the menu: Tools - Internet Options - Clear History.

Thirdly, open Windows Explorer and look in the folder C:\Windows\History\Today. Just delete what you like.

TweakUI is not included with Windows 98 Second Edition.
