windows 8 networking problem

After doing something like six hours of searching, and getting minimal results, I thought I would ask some of our more experienced dopers for some help.

I am running windows 8 on desktop, and xp pro on laptop. Both are connected to the same workgroup and have sharing enabled. At the moment, I can peruse the laptop from the desktop, but while the laptop can see the shared connections on the desktop, I cannot access them, a pop up box saying you dont have the required permissions check with system admin.

Over the last couple of days, I have spent like about 4 hours on google, looking for a solution. So what could I have missed and or what should I be looking for on my windows 8 permissions set up.

It’s sort of complex even though it shouldn’t be. I usually have to suffer a bit to make it work. Try this: How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing.

Okay that appeared to have done the trick, that was harder than it had to be , I would have rather perfered the old way of simply clicking share under the drive and getting the hand.

Since I want to be able to transfer pictures from the laptop to the usb hard drive on the desktop, I have to set a folder, instead of sharing the entire drive.
