Has everybody over the age of 30 forgotten how it used to be before it warmed up?
Winter came, the temperature dropped to freezing or below in new england. Every few days white stuff would fall from the sky and pile up on the ground. A funny vehicle called a snow plow would rumble past clearing the roads, and sometimes it would scatter a mix of sand and salt. Life went on as usual.
Why in the name of everything unholy that now in the winter if it drops below freezing it is a newsworthy event, and if there is a hint of a snowflake the doomsayers pitch fits and moan about the storm aproaching.
Ye gods, it took a good 6 inches overnight and the princepal of the school deciding he wanted to sleep in that day to get a snow day. Now if a snowflake hits the ground all the schools delay 90 minutes and if we get half an inch everybody acts like that King story Storm of the Century is hitting.
I live 50 miles away from my office, and I make it in just fine, the only slowdown I tend to experience is the idiot drivers who cant seem to understand that the roads are cleared, sanded/salted and it is safe to drive more than 10 miles an hour - I can manage a brisk 45. I conceed it is not safe to do 65. I have people who live 5 miles from work who call out because of the weather. I have even volunteered to go to their house and pick them up, to no avail.
Well, I’m glad to hear that it’s not just we Brits who get hysterical about snow these days. So far this “winter” we’ve had one half-inch dusting that melted by midday, and another more severe blizzard in which an inch of snow lay on the ground for a day or so. That one was accompanied by Severe Weather warnings from the Meteorological Office and dire warnings to stay at home unless your journey was absolutely necessary  . It was great actually, I got to work in record time that day.
I’m concerned for this weekend. Why? It’s not snow, there should be 15 to 18 inches of heavey snow by the end of Sunday with periods of freezing rain. It’s going to be at the freezing mark during the day for a week, and in the twenties at night. I went to get groceries this morning and it’s the typical outages, they have without a storm. No hamburger buns, no french bread, no every frink’n thing I need today, because I’m out of everything. This goes for the alternatives I can think of, and the alternative alternatives.
Well, we have 50 lb flour and a pound of yeast. Technically I dont need to buy bread for about 3 months … and you can make hamburger rolls and loaves of bread [could i suggest a nice sourdough boule or with the purchase of some rye flour a nice bavarian rye? =)
Ya know, I love the Colorado Mountains (Denver is another story). 15-18 inches of snow is hardly an event. Won’t close schools, people won’t be late for work.
But I will say that the last three storms Denver had started to effect us up in the mountains. Started to get a little low on supplies in the stores. Wasn’t a big deal, but lets see, bananas, milk and eggs where the first to go.
We have an ice damn at the bottom of our driveway. Picture about 300 square feet of solid ice that is on a slope. 'bout 6 inches thick. It’s getting a bit tricky with our 4x4’s so I bought 150 pounds of sand to spread on it. This also helps melt it. I’m going to buy another few hundred pounds today.
