So my Grandma, bless her, is going to be 90 years old this July 1st. I will, of course, be there to help her celebrate. But, after the party is over, the cake is eaten, and the keg is floating…then what? I know – this is a golden opportunity to meet fellow Dopers who I would otherwise never meet.
The details: I will be in the town of Black River Falls, WI from July 1-5, 2006. I would be willing to drive to nearly anywhere in Western Wisconsin (La Crosse, Eau Claire) and even down to Madison (I know there are a bunch of Dopers down there) for a Dopefest.
Ideally, the best day for me to slip away is Monday, July 3rd, but I could probably do Sunday evening as well.
Black River Falls, eh? I might even run up there and see you. I have this girl friend up there. Crazy, crazy girl friend. No, you don’t know her now, but if you go to Black River you will. Rest up.
Seriously, I do have a crazy friend up there I’ve been meaning to go visit. Maybe we could meet somewhere and say howdy. Last time I was there some goofy kids took my middle-age butt for a ride on one of those ATV things. I’ve had tendonitis ever since.

Yes, I do like tall, loud women. However, I am happily in a relationship at the moment. Besides, I had so much extended family in the area, she’s probably related to me…

I think there’s only a couple Dopers in this part of the state, but I’ll keep an eye out for this thread and if things work out we can have a micro-dope fest.

La Crosse has River Fest going on the week of the 4th. That’s good or bad depending on how you feel about over priced bits of food and bad warm beer covered with flies (heh! can you tell how I feel about it?)
I did in no way intend to omit, slight, offend, fold, spindle, or mutilate the good people of Minnesota. I would love to meet as many of my fellow midwestern Dopers as possible.

I’m up for CheeseDope (?). I’d prefer to keep it within an hour (two at most) of Madison since we’ll probably have other stuff going on that weekend, but I’d like to meet some of the local Dopers.
I’m just acrosse the river from laCrosse, but I’m not sure I will be home then. (i.e I may be away for 4th of July weekend).

So…who is definately still interested? And where do we want to do this thing? It sounds like La Crosse may be the most central location to get the greatest amount of Dopers.

La Crosse is great for me, seeing as how that’s where I am. I’ll make sure to let Ms. “X” know there is a recently unattached man with a fondness for tall, loud women coming to the area.
Sorry I haven’t responded lately…my home computer is down and work has been crazy.
Anyway, I leave for vacation tomorrow! If all goes well, I will arrive in Black River Falls Friday evening. As it stands now, Sunday afternoon would be the best time to get together (with Monday as a fallback). I’m thinking 3:00ish in La Crosse.
The only question left is where? I am not familier with places to meet in La Crosse, so I will leave that in y’all’s capable hands. Let me know what is consensus is.
Just so you know, after I leave work today, I probably will not be online again until I get to my aunt and uncle’s place on Friday.

Hmmmm, the downtown area will be pretty busy due to the Riverfest thing. But, if the other couple people who might be able to make it want to meet there I can live with it. You’d have to buy a button to get into the beer area, if you want beer. Which I do. And I think we’re looking at rain for that day. Can you tell I don’t want to meet there?

moonstarssun sorry, La Crosse is probably farther than you want to travel.
We could meet at Nutbush, which is close to I-90 (and my house… always thinking of me!) The bar on top of Grandad’s bluff is a fun place to go. The park up there is nice too. If you tend to drink the drive back down is dangerous. Both of these places serve your basic food like burgers and such.
The Casino bar downtown is sort of a La Crosse landmark. They serve fancy import beer in a 40’s? 50’s? retro sort of place. I think the orginal owner is probably dead by now. That guy knew his beer, and man was he a crabby old gus.

Nutbush or Grandad’s bluff both sound nice and low-key, which is good, because after Grandma’s party tomorrow, low-key will be perfect.

You know the first thing the boys and I did when we crossed the state line this afternoon? Stopped and got some cheese curds…mmmmm, cheese curds. God, I love those things…and I swear they are impossible to find outside of WI. Y’all are just selfish, you know that?
Normally I’d suggest a place with outside seating (Pettibone boat club?)
But with the rainy WX that might not be best.
I really don’t have a stron opinion.
