I’m sure that the series will pick up as it goes on, but the first two episodes haven’t been much like Adventure Time. Depressed people who hate their lives, mostly slow, and mostly dull. It appears to be aimed at an older audience than the original series. Not only the dull plot so far but the language (Fiona says “goddamn it” at one point, a certain other character mentions someone being “pissed”) and violence includes blood-splatter (if the original series was that graphic, I didn’t take note of it).
(And I see from the Wiki link that it is indeed an “adult series”. Not everything needs to be grimdarked up…)
Liked Adventure Time (mostly), liked AT: Distant Lands (mostly), but I never much liked the Fionna and Cake episodes. So it’s not starting off as a strong draw for me, but I guess I’ll check what the consensus is after all the episodes drop. It’s certainly a good creative team, so you never know.
