That was almost entirely Tim Reid’s doing. The man is very against stereotypical portrayals of black actors, and convinced the producers that he could make Venus Flytrap an interesting character without resorting to them. But they had to get the show on the air first. I don’t have a cite on hand - this is something I remember hearing him say in one of the many interviews he’s done on radio (or read in the paper) years ago. He’s a favorite son around these parts - graduate of Norfolk State University and a very generous donor to that school.
