Woman Beats an 8 Month Pregnant Woman And Tries To Steal Her Baby

This’ll make the Pit anyway; it’s already made the national news. I’m not up to doing it justice, but I can at least provide you with a solid link and let others express their outrage. Here’s the link.

Peggy Jo Conner told her boyfriend she was 8 months pregnant. Apparently, she wasn’t. She hit her neighbor, Valerie Oskin, who was 8 months pregnant, over the head with a baseball took her out to the woods several miles away, slashed her across the belly with a razor, and waited for her to die, presumably so she could steal her baby. Ms. Oskin and Ms. Conner were neighbors. There is some good news. A 17 year old boy rode by on his ATV while Ms. Conner was waiting for Ms. Oskin to die. Ms. Conner said they were all right, but the young man didn’t like the amount of blood, so he told his father what he saw. The authorities were called, and Ms. Oskin is now in the hospital. Her baby was delivered by C-section; Ms. Oskin is in critical condition. Ms. Conner is in jail.

I will Pit one idiotic thing I heard on the news while I was writing this. A local preacher said that the young man’s finding Ms. Conner and Ms. Oskin is proof of God’s benevolence because, if he hadn’t found them, Ms. Oskin would surely have died. No. I’m a devout Christian, but I’ll take the Atheist’s argument because I agree with it. A benevolent God who intervenes in the way this preacher indicated would not have allowed this to happen in the first place or allowed Ms. Oskin to be found a lot sooner. The events I described took place over at least 12 hours. It was two hours between when the young man found them and when the authorities got to them.

Have at it, folks. I’m thinking that some nice, fluffy kitten and puppy pictures would be nice.

That is one strange piece of computation of your future scenarios, Peggy Jo. Your neighbour’s body would be found sans baby, and you’re wandering about with a baby but no explanation for your boyfriend or anyone else regarding where you delivered it and why your genitals are not birth-traumatised. And this is all assuming that you could deliver the baby yourself without killing it. (Incidetnally, why was she “waiting for Valerie to die?”. She’d have to whip the baby out anyway, whenever Valerie died.)

She doesn’t exactly seem like the most reasonable of people.

What a sick fuck.

Just what is it that makes you think this miserable excuse for a woman is capable of logical thought or planning? She probably has to concentrate really hard to tie her shoes.

How in hell do you fake being eight months pregnant, anyway?

Some people just don’r show. There are tales of women starting to give birth and thinking, “What the hell is happening?” because they didn’t know they were pregnant.

Again? Crap. :frowning:

Anybody else thinking about that scene from March of the Penguins where the penguin who just lost her egg (or maybe it had hatched by then) attempts to beat up and steal from another penguin? We’ve come so far.

These folks are from my part of town. Sheesh. At least the poor dingoes didn’t foot the blame.

And she would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for those meddlesome kids.

I just wanted to observe that trying to use this incident as proof of a benevolent God, or proof that he does not exist, is just silly on both sides.

I’m just thankful, myself, that this poor woman and her baby weren’t killed.

Such logic of the preacher. So if someone isn’t found in time, then God obviously didn’t care about that person?
My question is; I have read its innaccurate to call people who do these things “sick”, they are just evil. Thoughts?

Most people who sue the word evil these days are conservatives who believe our lifestyle has become too permissive and that the solution is some sort of militaristic theocratic despotism. I reject their coopting of the word, but I do believe there is such a thing as evil, and that it is present in people who do things like this in just about its purest form.

I consider it a distinct possibility that this woman didn’t care whether or not she got away with stealing a baby. Some things are done just for the doing.

In an AP article on MSNBC, her husband “called the allegations against her “impossible” and said she truly was pregnant.”

Can you say “denial”? :dubious:

… or, maybe she was pregnant and had a miscarriage she’s hiding from him? Or she was pregnant, had a premature birth, decided she didn’t like it, killed it, and went for a replacement?

I know, I was hoping that someone had mistaken an old news story for a new one. Unfortunately that’s not the case.

Anyone hear an update on Oskin’s condition? Is it still critical?

To quote Andrew Vachss–Don’t confuse sick with sickening.

I don’t like threads like this. What else is there to say except “that’s just horrible”? Can we really have a meaningful discussion about this? It’s like we’re revelling in depravity.

Well, we could have a discussion aobut wether GOD is a sick fuck for allowing things like this to happen; if you reread the OP you’ll note that the preacher was specifically singled out as a subject of this pitting.

With regard to that topic, the 'ligious types have long had ways of justifying the evils of the world in a way that absolves God of responsibility, wether by blaming them on the devil, the agency of man, or stating that they are necessary tests of our spirit for which we will be compensated later. They constantly do this while simultaneously telling us that some, many, most, or all of the good things that happen are directly attributable to god, to whom we owe something for this benevolence. This double standard has permeated religion since the dawn of the benevolent god, and shouldn’t realy be surprising any of us anymore.

Well, it sure beats revelling in. . um. . . other, far worse stuff.

The linked article doesn’t give a lot of detail. It does say that Peggy Jo was not pregnant at the time of her assault upon Valerie.

Now, consider this scenario. Peggy Jo might well have been pregnant, and some time into her (pick a trimester) she loses her baby via a miscarriage or premature birth. Whatever the situation, the foetus/baby dies.

Unable to cope with her own grief or perhaps shame of losing her pregnancy, she continues to tell people (and herself) that she is with child. This might well have been exacerbated by a severe post-natal depression, especially if the foetus was delivered later in the pregnancy. Peggy Jo comes to believe that she is nearing her due date.

In her psychotic world, the only answer to her problem is to get a child. It doesn’t matter how. She might even have believed that Valerie had stolen her unborn child originally, such is the way that severe psychosis works. Who knows??

All I know from this story is that some things are very, very sad. I’m not about to condemn Peggy Jo as evil because chances are, the poor woman was as crazy as a cut snake at the time of the offenses.

God bless them all.
