Women has face transplant after Chimpanzee attack

Yep, no looking back or saving face on this one…but I got a hand it to you anyway…

Look, I’ve been volunteering at the zoo, largely with the gorillas. (They are, of course, behind nice solid protective enclosures at all times. We do not play pattycake with 500 pound primates.) The keepers of these MUCH larger animals say chimpanzees scare the crap out of them.

Note to self: if a friend ever calls and asks for help with misbehaving pet chimpanzee, the correct answer is “I’m busy.”

“Forever”.

There were several articles and accounts of chimp attack dynamics back when this first happened. Apparently it’s quite common for them to focus on destroying the face and genitals of their victims. While horrifying to read about or see clips of chimps doing this to other chimps in the forest, the thought of such carnage being inflicted on a human, who is practically completely defenseless in comparison, is unimaginable.

Waitaminute. The chimp used keys? Was this a single large key or was some trial and error involved? A whole host of horrors can be birthed from this scenario.

I blame Buddy.

Never mind. Someone already mentioned it.

They leave the victims incapacitated in trees to eat at their leisure.

Hands and feet, too. They are absolutely vicious animals and smart enough to know what parts of the body are most vulnerable. I would rather face down an enraged rhinoceros than a chimp.

Okay, I have a totally gruesome and uncalled-for question. The Wikipedia article says that “paramedics noted she lost her hands, nose, eyes, lips, mid-face bone structure, and received significant brain tissue injuries”. The chimp didn’t crack into the brain, did he? Or would you get that from the force of the attack (swelling, concussion, etc.)?

Either one is possible - the chimp might have cracked her skull, or might have attacked her with such force as to cause closed-skull injury, or both.

OK, let’s nip this Planet of the Apes thing in the bud.

the hand transplants have failed. i remember seeing ms nash on oprah. a really horrific attack.

zsofia, it is possible that travis did reach parts of the brain. she suffered many breaks to the bones of the face and jaw. he also had crunched into the forehead area with his jaws/teeth.

Well, the forehead area is pretty damned thick, as skull parts go. The mid-face, which he evidently completely destroyed, on the other hand, may be much easier to penetrate.

I’m guessing through the eyes to the brain.

We share, what, 98% of our DNA with these bastards?
I makes one wonder what prehistoric human behavior was like.

Prehistoric, my ass. Read about some of the war crimes in Africa, or during WWII. Or that lady who smashed a kitten with a bat. Or the mother who drugged up her toddler and left her in a car trunk to die. Or lynchings, which were frequently begun with genital mutilation.

We’re a vicious species as well.

There’s this theory

It’s ripping the face off and eating it that I find particularly disturbing. Of course if modern humans had teeth like a chimp, that would be added to the other atrocities we commit.
