Wait – I haven’t seen a photo of her recently. I’m totally scouring the web now to find one. :wally
Find the pictures when she won her Oscar - she looked horrendously ill.
Hmm, I did wonder where her tits had gone in The Hulk, but i’m sure the role would involve beefing up a bit for it anyways.
If anything, the role would involve filling out even more. Are there any flat-chested comic heroines?
This one might do. You can find more pictures of her in her “Zoe” role on Firefly at this site. This is the role that convinces me she’s got the chops for Wonder Woman.
She played a very different and very creepy role on Angel, as Jasmine: these pictures aren’t great, but they’ll show you what she looks like in character. Her very different performance here speaks more to her versatility than to her specific Wonder Woman chops.

I’m sorry boys, but Gina Torres hasn’t got a hope in hell of playing WW looking like that. Catwoman you could get away with as nobody gives a fuck, but Wonder Woman? Not a chance.
This is not a slur on Gina’s looks or acting abilities. She just ain’t Wonder Woman, and I can’t see her being cast at all. And as for Minnie Driver, I’ve got more chance of being cast as WW than her.
Left Hand, I don’t think those photos make your case. They have “supporting cast” written all over them. I didn’t watch Angel or Buffy, but I was an ardent supporter of Firefly. She’s no Wonder Woman. The Companion would make a much better choice if your only options are from Joss Whedon vehicles.
I’ve got to agree, folks. Gina Torres doesn’t have the Wonder Woman look at all–whether we’re talking about race, physical build or raw beauty.
Y’all are all wrong, and that’s all I got to say about it :D.
Daniel
I disagree. I think Gina is far prettier than most of the other names being discussed. Plus, I like that she’s not a big celebrity. They made the wise decision to go with an unknown to play Superman; I’d like them to do the same with WW.
Well there was the PowerPack. Of course, that was because the girls were prepubescent.
OTTOMH the smallest chested female still presented as a sex object is supervillainess and hench wench, Harley Quinn. Drawn properly (some artist just put her head on a standard sex doll body) her breasts are a C or even a B cup. She also has a much smaller butt than most super women. Harley has years of gymnastics training (She actually got into college on a gymnastics scholarship). While considerably more curved than the competitors you’d see at actual meets, Harley is drawn with considerably less bodyfat than Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Batgirl etc. Whenever an artist draws Harley with D cups, wide hips, or a big booty I get upset.
The front page of Harley’s Haven has her posed in way that makes her butt and hips look a little bigger than normal, but the boobs are the right size.
Am I the only one that sees the obvious choice for WW? Lauren Graham.
No charge.

I disagree. With a personal trainer, she would be physically right for the part. But, I cannot imagine her portraying the strength of will, nobility, and other aspects of Wonder Woman’s personality.
Lauren is too cutsie and perky for the role. Besides she’s older than Lucy Lawless so if Lucy, who is Wonder Woman incarnate, is too old, then so is she.
Kitty Pryde of the X-Men. Originally this was because she was introduced as a 13-year old, but in current continuity, she’s about 20, and still has a remarkably normal looking body for a comic heroine. In fact, if you look at how she’s drawn in Astonishing and compare it to Byrne’s version from the 80’s she’s actually a bit less curvy.
Interestingly, this was actually used to some effect in the late 100s or so. The cover showed a resurrected Phoenix, and sure enough, at one point in the story, Phoenix seems to have returned to life. It turns out that it was a diversionary ploy, with Kitty having put on a Phoenix suit and phased through the floor to scare the bad guys.
But even on the cover, and subesequently in the story, you could tell that it wasn’t actually Jean–this Phoenix was relatively flat chested.
Mia, the new Speedy in Green Arrow, has small-medium sized breasts.
Neither of these characters are intended to be sex symbols, though that doesn’t stop the fans from making Kitty into one.
My only problem with Lucy Lawless is that she doesn’t seem to have the gravitas of, say, Toby McGuire; I don’t know that she could pull off real emotion in the movie, pulling it out of the Cheeseball category of comic movies. If she can play a part without a sly wink at the audience, I’d be fine with her.
Daniel
Lucy Lawless is a darned fine actress. I don’t know if she can convey gravitas, but I suspect that she can.
My problem with her is that she doesn’t have quite the right look. Close, but not quite right.
I dunno, I think that Lawless (even at her age) would be just fine, except for the fact that she’s already done Xena. When the same performer does two very similar characters, it can be difficult to distinguish them and develop them as separate. When characters are different enough (Agent Smith and Elrond, say) this isn’t a problem, and sometimes, developing the characters separately isn’t too big a deal (as in many romantic comedies, for instance). But with Xena and Wonder Woman, I don’t think it would work.
There were episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess that called for just that, and I always thought Lawless did quite well. The show wasn’t just campy good fun (although many of the best episodes were).
I’d suspect that Lawless might not actually want to be Wonder Woman, though. I think she’s the obvious choice, but as Chronos says, taking the role could make it more difficult for her to get non-warrior woman roles in the future. Considering that there aren’t that many warrior woman roles in the first place, it wouldn’t necessarily be a very good career move for her even if the movie was successful.
