I thought it might be useful to have a separate thread on each episode
(a la Enterprise), so we can get a feel for how the show is progressing (or regressing, as the case may be). I was disappointed in the second episode. Didn’t have the same witty, whimsical scenes or dialogue as the premiere episode. Okay, so our heroine had to figure out how to deal with the stuttering schemer and get her job back, blah, blah, with a few hints from the talking animals – but not much better than your typical sit com. I was glad to see that the relationship with the bartender hadn’t progressed (need to maintain the romantic suspense), but otherwise it was a far cry from the first episode.
Really? I was very impressed with this episode. It had me laughing out loud quite a bit, when most shows only make me chuckle at best. (I really do chuckle, too. :p)
It also showed me that the writers are willing to be pretty creative. The show’s events are just barely plausible, almost Sienfeldian in that sense, even if the overall premise only comes through a suspension of disbelief. I think the two work together real well, and I also like that she didn’t spend a bunch of time arguing with the objects like the first one.
My expectations for the show keep going up. They’ve got me hooked. Plus, I think I’m in love with Jaye. Just saying.
Yarr, gotta throw in my support behind Erislover. I loved Jaye and “Binky” in this episode, which kept that fun pseudo-absurd feeling of the first and moved along at a nice clip. And as Kramer would say, “Ca- ca- ca- catfight?!”
I agree it wasn’t as entertaining as the first episode. Also, I’m not sure about the story’s resolution. I mean, writing someone’s article for them will jump-start their career? Loved the whole Gen Y philosophy and the “Genii’s bottle” stuff. I’ll keep watching, but I don’t expect this one to be around too long.
I enjoyed it. I don’t know if I enjoyed it as much as the first episode, but it was very amusing. I loved the ‘that was uncalled for’, ‘you called for it’ banter, LOL.
I rather liked it. I’m enjoying how it’s a pretty zany show but they still seem to be developing the characters instead of allowing them to become parodies. I hope that’s the direction they’re going, anyhow.
Liked it, but not as much as the first epsiode.
I’m sorry, but I busted a gut laughing during the van confrontation.
“I was trying to st…”
“Stab me?”
“No! St…”
“Steal my organs AFTER you stabbed me?”
“No! St…”
“Stitch together a skin suit from my corpse after you stabbed me and stole my organs?”
The second episode was still quite funny, but definitely not as good as the first. The “interloper who’s really a smarmy creep, but no one else seems to notice” is a plot device that feels familiar from other sitcoms, and I get impatient sitting through those plots: I wanted Jaye to deck her and be done with it. Plus, I thought it odd how little the talking tchotchkies figured into the plot; it was as if they were eager to prove right off the bat that they didn’t need the gimmick to make the show work.
I’m still down with this show, though. And they played the theme this week, which was cool.
I liked it but I didn’t like some of the things that happened in it.
It had some good funny lines “Let’s take her clubbing.” “Clubbing seals?”
But some of the stuff that was happening with Binky just seemed too creepy.
Then when Jaye wrote the article and sold it under Binky’s name that was just dumb. Okay, maybe Jaye didn’t want the fame and recognition but at least keep some sort of evidence that she wrote it as possible blackmail or leverage later, or even if she decides on a career in journalism at some point. Not blackmail in the monetary sense but in case Binky decides to stick around or write a follow-up article that may not be complimentary. Then again, maybe I am just too devious and Jaye just simply wanted her crappy life back and that’s all there was to it.
That would be too much work. Kind of the point of the episode.
Yeah, I realize that. But as someone who wishes she could write well enough to get published I just couldn’t get my mind around the idea of just tossing that accomplishment away and not taking credit for it.
Sheesh! Next you’ll want animal figurines to start telling you what to do!
Im in the UK - may never see this show and therefore can offer no opinion on its merits… however -
As a rabid XTC fan I am all-too aware that the theme to the show from ep 2 onwards is writtten by Andy Partridge and I have heard this fabulous tune on the fox website.
I hope this show runs forever and the theme reaps as much money as the Friends theme
I love XTC
Dang, I was really laughing out loud. And I rarely do that. Lots of clever dialogue, great acting, and excellent script. The casting is impressive, too. Wow, I like this show.
Another thing I noticed about this episode was how great Jaye’s “crappy” life is. Most people (including Jaye’s family) would look at Jaye’s job, home, and accomplishments and call her a loser. In my opinion, this is just an example of the rampant consumerism in the US culture. Americans are too busy trying to keep up with the Joneses that they forget to appreciate all that they have.
Jaye’s life has many advantages: a stress-free and low expectation job, a loving and supportive family, the eclectic genie’s bottle, and a budding relationship with the bartender. When these are threatened, Jaye starts to appreciate her life and realizes it is worth fighting for.
I hope this episode helped get rid of some of the Joan-Wonderfalls comparisons. They really are quite different, just as you might expect from a melodrama versus a dark comedy.
I’m trying to skip most posts so as to avoid spoilers. Does anyone know if this episode, like the pilot, will be rebroadcast at any point? burundi and I were on the road at 9 Friday.

Heck, I’d trade places with her in a minute!
Left Hand, I don’t see it on my local affiliate’s schedule, but I didn’t see the repeat of the pilot on their schedule, either. I’d check this Thursday at 9, after Tru Calling.
