The B&N on 7th Ave in Brooklyn is gonna have a run on that book, Eve. Congrats, like I said before. (BTW, I was the one to suggest a mob descend on the B&N in the Village. Not that I’m proud of that.
Way to go, Eve! I will check our local bookstores this weekend. I’d been meaning to get one of your books anyway (really, I was) and I may as well get this one, now that it’s here.
This is so cool! I’m going to take it to work and talk it up to people. It’s so cool that I know a published author!
I went to Border’s at lunch and enquired (Not “Little Golden Books” – books by Eve Golden!) but it was not in stock yet. I then went to the music department and asked for a CD with the chicken dance on it. (Don’t ask!) I hope they don’t put the two requests together – “If you liked this book you’ll also like: Drew’s Greatest Party Hits, featuring The Chicken Dance!”
I should get the Jean Harlow bio for my dad whose birthday is very soon. He’s an avid reader and generally lives in the past. (The last actress he’s heard of is Tuesday Weld. The last actress he liked was Lizabeth Scott.)
I’ll go hunt for it this weekend. Is it all right with you if I say, “I’m looking for ‘Anna Held and the Birth of Ziegfeld’s Broadway’. A friend of mine wrote it.” ?
Congrats Eve! I’m strapped for $ now, but will buy it when I can. That era is one of my faves. In the meantime, I’ll head down to my local bookstore and request it. The owner is the outgoing president of the Independent Booksellers Assoc., so a bug in his usually receptive ear couldn’t hurt.
Eve, this is wonderful! May I polish your earrings, brew you some Earl Grey, or otherwise act awe-struck?
Hope this isn’t gauche to say to an author, but I’ve ordered 3 copies for the library–and 1 for my personal copy. Hey, it’s still cash, and we are honor bound to provide the good stuff to the public, along with some of the hopeless popular crap.
I’m so vicariously thrilled for you, it’s ridiculous. Here are all us Dopers, popping our vest buttons with pride, bragging, “Lady Eve? Sheesh, we knew her when she was Flora McFlimsey!”.
Beaming like an idiot,
Veb
The one day my boss actually spent the whole day in the office and it had to be today. Sheesh. I’ll try to make some more calls tonight and/or tomorrow.
I also stopped at Borders on my way home from work. They - Gasp! - didn’t have your book and had no intention of getting any in. I had to special order it! So I did.
Do you think they log the number of phone calls they get requesting certain books, and if there are a lot of them, then they order some? If it really does work that way, I’ll call them every day until they tell me that they’ve ordered some for stock!
Only $19.25 at amazon.com
The last time I went to Borders, they had none of your books, Eve. I was so bummed. But I will go there this weekend and demand them. I’m desperate for the Theda Bara bio, and this Anna Held one sound much too terrific!
Hasn’t it occurred to you that Eve may not be thrilled to hear person after person say, “I checked the bookstore and they never heard of you, Eve the Obscure…” or worse, “…they heard of you but see no point in ordering your book.” Sheesh, people, have some tact!
didn’t realize you wrote for movieline, i get that, now i’ve GOT to go back through all my issues and look for which articles were yours…
congrats!
Thanks, all! Autographs are to be had free of charge, if you send the books to my work address (available upon request). I’ll even sign 'em “Flora” if you want.
Oh, Chef, you’re sweet, but I hardly expected the worker bees at Border’s to be going, “Oh, wow—the new Eve Golden is in!” Though, Shayna, you may tell them if “they had no intention of getting it,” that they can die like pigs in hell.
Veb, thanks for ordering all those copies!
Those of you who asked about my Harlow and Bara books—the Harlow is out of print, but some B&Ns still stock the paperback. Otherwise, I’d try bookfinder.com, there’s usually a few copies there. The Bara book is still available through amazon.com; but if you want to save money I always recommend bookfinder, where you can comparison-shop.
Pluto, “Little Golden Books” are nuthin’—when I do a name-search on myself at amazon, for some reason they keep showing “The Touch Me” book or something like that . . . Hmmm . . .
Eve, I have this … friend who likes to buy his books on the cheap. Naturally, I buy all my books full price at an independent book store and would never do a thing like buy a book online just because it was discounted 20% or more and I didn’t have to pay sales tax. Because that would be wrong.
But my friend would like to know who takes the bite when he buys discounted books online. He’s hoping he’s sticking it to Jeff Bezos, but he worries he might be stealing royalties from the author. My friend doesn’t even want to admit to a published author that he bought her last two books online. Even though he swears he asked for it in over a dozen bookstores.
Congratulations!!
I’m gonna go to my fave bookstore today and special order it. (They do used books and NYT bestsellers, so I don’t expect them to have it in stock–yet.) I also have a library connection, and I’ll see what I can do!
I can’t wait to read it!
Cool! Gives me something to look for when I head over to Barnes & Noble tonight for my weekly coffee…
So, ummm, has anyone actually FOUND my book yet? Is B&N (“the Evil Empire”) lying to me, or is it actually on bookshelves anywhere?
Wow! Congratulations, Eve!! That is so cool!
It’s so awesome when someone can actually succeed at what they love doing - and vicariously extra awesome when it’s someone I know!
I’ll check if any of the bookstores in Copenhagen have it, but I’ll probably have to wait til I move back to the States.
Thanks, Pimp—I doubt it will be distributed in Copenhagen, but you can get it through amazon.com.
Has anyone actually SEEN it yet? I am beginning to think I hallucinated writing the whole thing . . .
That is really great Eve, I hope the excitement of getting a new book published never wears off.
I will keep my eyes out for it over here in London.
Keep up the great work, the reviews sound really impressive.
