I was going to wait till it hit the bookstores in early Sept., but I was too excited, because I found out yesterday that I have a three-quarter-page review in the London Sunday Times Book Review!! Jiminy! Frustratingly, you can’t access the London Times online w/o a forty-pound fee! Not that I couldn’t afford to lose forty pounds . . . I was so happy and excited last night I couldn’t get to sleep. When I’m upset or depressed, I jump right into bed and fall asleep, but last night I’m lying there thinking, “what is this? Do I have the flu or something?” Then I realized I was happy: so THAT’S what that feels like!
Well, it should be landing with a polite, ladylike thud on bookstore shelves sometime the first week of Sept., or so. Hope y’all like it! It’s got a lot more sex and scandal and cussin’ than my previous books. I’m certainly not asking that you all buy a copy, but it would be nice if you could go rushing into your local bookstore, eyes bugging out and waving your hands around, demanding that they order as many copies as they can cram onto their shelves.
By the way, among the acknowledgements is one to the “Teeming Millions of the SDMB,” for your help in directing me to British history, leukemia-related, and other useful internet sites.
Shamefully, I admit that I have not read your other books (although I was always a big fan of the Movieline column). But I plan on reading this one, because I enjoy Kay Kendall’s movies, plus I think she was simply gorgeous. Congrats to you on another successful endeavour!
First of all Eve, congrats on the new book. I sincerely hope it sells a million copies.
However, I’ve meant to bring this up before, so here goes.
I don’t really care much for biographies. Never had. I always feel a little like a voyeur and I generally wind up finding out things I really didn’t want to know about the person in question.
But when a book by one of my fellow Dopers comes out I feel compelled to at least check out the book in the store. Check it out, page through it, read a few passages – that sort of thing. See if perhaps this particular book is to my taste.
When your last book came out I attempted to do just that. I headed off to my local Barnes & Noble where they actually had a couple of your books. But what do I find when I get there?
Your book is wrapped in plastic shrink-wrap.
Well, how the hell am I supposed to look through the book now? Become some kind of vandal? None of the other biographies are wrapped up like an adventurous housewife.
I think to myself – this is not a good marketing strategy. More people would but your books if they were able to sample the interiors and read your sterling prose.
I engage in a brief fantasy wherein I bravely go from bookstore to bookstore, ripping the plastic from Eve Golden biographies, allowing the masses to peek inside. I realize that I’m starting to get carried away and leave the store so I can take my medication in peace.
Will you new book be similarly wrapped up? Can this practice be stopped or do you agree with it?
HOORAY, Eve!! Congratulations! I can’t wait to read this book, I’m going to order it right now.
As a person who owns all of Eve’s previous works (including a personalized and autographed sacred copy of Vamp, I can assure everyone that Eve’s books are meticulously researched, sensationally written and photograph-filled. They are jewel studded treasures fit only for royalty.
Therefore, if you own a goat, stay away from this book!
As Dan says, I have nothing to do with that, and neither does my press—I suspect that’s all B&N’s doing, for some bizarre reason. I have been plugging the bejeebus out of this book—every backside at Condé Nast has my lipstick print on it, with the result that we got a nod in the August Vanity Fair! This London Times review is a huge coup, as Kay is still very much loved over there.
Now . . . anyone friends with Nicole Kidman or her agent, so I can slip a copy under her door?
“Golden grapples nobly with this captivating sprite, and the difficulty of how to assess Kendall’s potential greatness alongside her undoubtedly zestful spirit”
Have you read it Eve - drop me an e-mail if you wish.
. . . Which plays havoc with a girl’s manicure, let me tell you. Thanks, London_Calling, I managed to snag the last copy of the Sunday Times from the Grand Central Station magazine stand last night.
Well, this explains why I couldn’t find a copy at my local Waldebooks two weeks ago; after looking over the new releases and SF section I was wandering through the shelves, trying to remember if there was anything I had been meaning to pick up, when I remembered seeing a mention of this book in a thread several months ago. I headed for the biography section but it wasn’t there. I was going to ask about it when I was paying for my books, but the line had been too long and I was afraid I was going to miss my train.
I am now making a mental note to check again in a week or two.
BTW, Eve the link in the second paragraph of your OP has a link to evegolden.com but when I tried to go there I got an invalid link error.
WOW! Cool! Etc. I love Kay Kendall. She is lovely. I will look out for the book. Just, y’know, to show people and say: I know the author. So, I don’t know Eve at all. But anyway.
Eve, I bought the Sunday Times this weekend. Will have a look for your review. If you’re really nice to me, email me your address and I’ll send you the clipping.
Hold on. Whats the difference between Opal getting ripped for posting a link to a site where you can order her goods, and Eve posting this link where at the bottom of the page you can order?
In the intrests of fairness, could this be addresed?
