It was completely intentional. Not only was he a jerk, but he could have avoided being HURTFUL (and I have every reason to believe that Una was affected by it) by keeping his comments to himself.

I should have expected you to come flying in here, based on the fact that it involves her, but I figured even you would see the wrong in it. But I guess that would require you to have tact and the ability to put prejudice behind you long enough to see reality.
Wrong - in case you missed it, I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and assuming she’s strong enough to withstand the onslaught that was, “No.” Evidently, nobody else can. As I said, it was inappropriate, but hey, we all know the rule around here - if you post it, they will respond. Kudos to Fierra for doing something nice, but there’s no rule on this board that says, “You can only say nice things in nice thing threads.”
Additionally, again, a lot more obnoxious and ignorant things have been said in MPSIMS, and rarely do warnings come of it. Do I think Lynn was out of line? No - it’s her job. But do I agree? No.

Yes, it did bother me a bit - it really just took my breath away, and made me wonder why someone would bother to be so…well Hell, people. People get called shit all the time, get royally flamed all the time, get accused of all sorts of atrocities every day on this Board. But it seems to me that some things have just have to be “sacrosanct”. Like a birthday thread in MPSIMS - I mean, good Goddess. If people were to start making a habit of little drive-by snipes in birthday threads, we would truly be a sad group. Regardless of whether we are “allowed” to do something under the rules, there ought to be some additional basic rules of courtesy to be followed in some cases. But overall, the comment bothered my Fierra moreso than it did me. And that is what really bothered me.
The thread title was in no way a “directive” for people to wish me happy birthday. If one recalls that Fierra is English, one may note that she says things in a little different manner than some. Thus, it may put the thread title language in persepective. Fierra is one of the most inoffensive people I know, and she certainly wasn’t “ordering” anyone to wish me a happy birthday. Anyone who really cared could also have asked what her intention was too…
Regardless, it is obvious that no one need wish anyone a happy birthday for any reason. However, if one does not know that the comment is an attempt at humor, the appearance of someone going out of their way to say they will not wish someone a happy birthday is…well, not very good, is it? Going out of your way to tell someone that you don’t wish them a happy birthday really makes one look like an immature and worthless person, regardless of how they appear elsewhere. Thus, it’s especially sad if the reaction is all over a joke gone awry. However, in that case, it would seem that there has been ample time for someone to state that was the intent.
woodstockbirdybird, I don’t recall ever having crossed you in any way. And after searching, I cannot find any reason you would felt like doing this. If you had an issue with me, it would have been nice just to mail me, and not come into a birthday thread to be difficult. I would welcome any mail that you sent me telling me how I offended you, and would be glad to listen to what I could do to make it right for you. Some people told me tonight that it was all intended as a joke, but they refused to post that themselves, preferring that you do it yourself. If so, you could have clarified here and stopped a lot of unnecessary flaming.

All right, enough already. I’ll try to keep it short so I don’t sound defensive. I did indeed mean it as a joke. I was responding to the thread title only. I have absolutely no personal grudge against Anthracite; unfortunately I was thoughtless and picked her birthday thread instead of a less personal thread for my attempt at a witty retort. I’m not gonna debate whether or not the “joke” was immature or stupid; that’s entirely subjective, and I at least found it somewhat funny at the time. But it was not posted to be intentionally hurtful, though I obviously should have thought more about how it would be interpreted. I freely admit to being a smartass, but I’m not the type of person who’s spiteful enough to “piss on somebody’s parade” in an entirely inappropriate thread/forum, whether I like them or not. So I was a jerk, and I apologize to the mods for breaking the rules. I also publicly apologize to Anthracite and fierra, who it directly affected, and wish Anthracite a sincere happy (belated) birthday. Hope I didn’t ruin your celebration.
To the rest of you who feel I’m such an asshole, you can believe I sacrifice infants to the Dark One himself for all I care. Hell, I can’t imagine you’d react any more violently. Let’s hammer a few things out, just to see how things stand:
WBB posted a terse, and negative, word (which carried lotsa connotations) in a thread that should have been about happiness and celebration.
When called upon such behavior, WBB refused to elaborate… indeed, he seemed to confirm the worst of everyone’s suspicions by refusing to seriously respond to anybody’s disapproval.
A lot of California dopers have come to WBB’s defense (note: I was unable to attend Socal/Nocal, so I haven’t the foggiest idea what’s going on behind the scenes… I’m just assuming).
I do agree that the initial reaction to WBB’s first “offense” may have seemed outrageous, but keep in mind that it’s these small quibbles that can result in huge, massive flame wars. Additionally, common courtesy would insist that WBB explain his actions… which he has refused to do so.
My conclusion? “Aw, shucks.”
Well, I for one took it as an attempt at humor.
Not “no; I won’t wish Anthracite a happy birthday because I loathe her;” but “no; don’t tell me what to do. Tee-hee.”
But it was nice to see the bunnies-and-fawns MPSIMS contingent get riled up.

And, I myself know all too well about jokes or dark humor that is misinterpreted, and have got myself in serious trouble and hurt people by those means.
