I’ve been searching for a word that describes or refers to the patterns of movement in windblown grass. Hopefully you’ve seen the phenomenon, because it would be very hard to explain. Unfortunately, my only reference for this word is from a Peanuts cartoon strip I saw years ago. Linus, the egg-head, uses the word and defines it while Charlie Brown stands by unbelievingly. I tried using an online reverse dictionary but that wasn’t very useful.
Not quite right, but maybe you mean brousse tigré (tiger brush)? From looking around, it seems that can refer to alternating bands of bare earth and vegetation that form perpendicular to prevailing winds.
Unfortunatly , I feel that none of these give me an “Ah-Hah” revelation that satisfies my vague memory. In fact , I might not recognize if it poked me in the eye.
thanks for the library link.
re: undulate - for a second I thought “oh crap” this word’s been right in front of me all this time! A word I know, A word I’ve used. But I think the mystery word refers specifically to undulations in grass.
These are wild guesses that are probably not even close, but maybe there’s not really a word for it and Linus was just saying “this word describes it well enough.” If that’s what happened, here are some possibilities that are plausible for the comics section: “luff”, “oscillation”, “seiche”, “sinusoidal”? Anything ring a bell?
Thanks for your reply (ALL) , but these are not ringing any bells. But like i said this was a few decades ago. I have , however, enjoyed looking up all these suggestions!
Perhaps I’ll try a Peanuts website or if I’m really bored just start going through the entire dictionary. Both could be fun.
