So the fiance and I have found a place that carves titanium rings with, among other things, text. Their website suggests 30 to 45 characters max (probably depending on the font width).
I came up with these suggestions but I know you dopers have lots of words in your heads, too.
At first I suggested some non-serious things…
“If you cheat on me, I’ll kill you.”
“Finally. Guilt-free sex.”
“In on the ding, out on the dong.” (part of a joke)
“Yes, Dear.”
“Hands off! She’s mine!”
“Third time’s a charm.” (my third marriage)
“Property of Belrix”
“If found, please return to…”
…on a more serious note…
“…but the greatest of these is love.” (1C13:13)
“Love never claims, it ever gives” (Ghandi)
“keep me in your heart, I’ll be there forever” (Winnie the pooh)
“I give myself to you. Forever.” (Me)
“til the sun grows cold and the stars grow old” (Shakespeare)
We could even stretch one saying across two rings:
“To love another person…”
“…is to see the face of God” (Les Miserables)
Frankly, not to be discouraging, but I’d avoid anything which says “forever” given that this is your third marriage (and I don’t believe it’s her first). I certainly hope you are happy together until death do you part, but. . . it just seems to me like “forever” and “always” are better sentiments for the young and idealistic—not for folk bringing baggage from previous marriages with them.
“I give myself to you” is fine–just skip the word Forever.
I don’t like the Les Mis quote–but that’s because it strikes me somehow as being too comercial, which is probably both silly and arbitrary.
The Pooh quote is better, except for the forever thing.
But really, I’d try for something with a little bit of character-- something that has meaning to the two of you, not just a generic sentiment.
My husband and I each had something engraved in the other’s ring without realizing the other was doing the same thing too. No we didn’t have the same thing done although that would have been spooky/funny too.
When we reached the point of no return and had not yet said I love you, we would look at each other and say “shhhhhh” which was just shorthand for I love you. We also used LOML when we were IMing or texting (stands for Love of My Life–yes it’s corny, so what?). Finally I walked down the aisle to the song Always.
So I had Shhhh engraved in his ring, and he had LOML Always engraved in mine. My suggestion to you is find words that you two have used that mean something to you. And then forget what the rest of us think
I don’t like the idea of stretching a quote across two rings because of the ambiguity of half a quote:
“To love another person…” is hell
“To love another person…” sucks
To get so drunk I puke in my shoes “…is to see the face of God”
Running naked down the street “…is to see the face of God”
Whether it is significant and feels right to you is what’s important, but I couldn’t do it. There’s too much ambiguity and too much potential for mocking/substitution. I too would go with something more personal, such as the date of your wedding or your nicknames for each other.
We used “beloved” on one ring and “let us love one another” on the other ring.
These are the first words of the well-known verses from 1 John 4:7-8 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God. And everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He who loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love.”
I see from the links to places that do it that the engraving is on the outside of the ring. That would make me vote for no engraving at all, unless you are teenagers.
