Working on holidays...

Greetings,
It occurs to me, that there are certain people who work odd hours. Weekends, midnight shifts, and certainly holidays. These people have to deal with the DJs on the radio saying things like, “Close the door, it’s 5PM on Friday…The Weekend is HERE.” This announcement invariably comes when I’m on my way to work on Friday, which is the start of my 5 day week, that week.
So, I wanted to know if anyone here is working on this 4th of July. If so, doing what? I’m a NYC cop, so I’ll be defending the citizens of Harlem from the forces of evil. No BBQ for me, or beaches. And lemme tell you with this heat wave, Kevlar is not the fabric of choice.

I posted in another thread, but might as well bitch here too. Twelve hour E.R. shift coming up in about an hour so be careful with the fireworks and make it an easy day for us

Yep, I’m working.

'Course, I’m not in the US, but…

Oh yeah. Night shift at a hotel - we never close for holidays, weekends, or anything else. I’ll be on tonight and I was on last night.

At work, help desk ops.

Dream, you’re not in the 25 are you? My brother used to be there. Now he’s in the 10th.

I’m working… but I’m in Canada. I am however willing to go home early out of respect and in support of my neighbors down south.

I had to go in on Canada Day (July 1) for a while… and what made it worse was that I was still in my 2 week holiday.

Needless to say, I’m giving myself tommorow off as payback.

There are good things about being in management

Working, self-employed, stack of deadlines.

Unfortunately, I’m working. Emissions testing locomotive engines.

I work as a studio op at a news station here in Austin.

Get in at 4:30 for the morning daybreak news…leave at 11:00 p.m. when the evening news is finally over.

Ahhh, the holidays.

On duty now in the hospital lab. No drunks so far but the evening is young yet.

A casino never sleeps. I too will be working a 12 hour shift tonight. I assume that most casino floor employee will too.

And a big, bright, sparkling starburst in the sky goes out to all my military brethren on duty today (and every day). Hope you see it and take care.

I worked my nine-hour retail store shift today, alone, and did not make my sales goal, but made more than two larger stores combined. We spent the day calling each other saying “Why are we open?” and “How much you got in now?” Lucky me had lots of foreign tourists staying at the hotels connected to the mall. The regional manager left a cheery little voice-mail saying “Sales should be great today- shoppers are always looking for great bargains on the holiday and our 50% off sale is gonna bring them in!” At 6 pm our store in a major mall had $143 in the till. Costs us more than that just to turn on all the lights and pay the poor schmuck who worked today.

If we were still in Kentucky, I would have had to go in for a couple of hours to take care of any boarding or hospitalized animals, but our clinic was closed on all big holidays. When I was waiting tables at Cracker Barrel, however, that was just beyond belief. I was living 3 hours from my nearest relative and 2 hours from DrJ’s family, but my roomie was cooking a Thanksgiving dinner. However, the brilliant, generous management scheduled me to work 11-9. I was going in too early for us to eat beforehand, and getting home way too late to make everyone else wait. And the huge families that came in so they wouldn’t have to cook their big family dinner sat around bitchilng about the menu.
