World of Warcraft: Legion general discussion thread 19 July 2016

I tried that scenario just enough to realize that “do it until you learn it” will take weeks. The way it’s designed, if you want to be even faintly successful you’ll have to read unofficial guide material. I can’t be assed to do that either. So I suppose Chromie will have to stay dead until I feel like I need another self-inflicted dose of confusion and frustration.

An outstanding example of Blizzard gaming design.

I haven’t tried any except a taste of the Southshore v. Tarran Mill, and that was massively disappointing because (A) battleground mechanics, (B) total loss of the actual sense of raging back-and-forth world PvP,and (C) I’m terrible at PvP, so pretty much just voluntarily going into a battleground is signing up to be repeatedly massacred. Thanks, no, I have Chromie on speed dial if I want frustration.

Ok, lurker on Straightdope for years, but a wow player for longer…

Currently I’m not in subscription… Dropped it two months ago, having tried, I tried…

I’m an alt’er. Been that way since, I think Wrath, I kind of was before, but I think it was Lich king when I hit every class at max level. That dual accounts thing got me the last few up, Rogue and Mage wer the last. Distributed them across two servers (to pass a char with gold for flyers), to have space for bank alts.

I even had 11 in wrath, come to think about it, I had a Pally on a horde pvp server (to make a change), just to see the horde side of the territories.

Cataclysm killed it for me, I think I got about four to max level (85?) and binned it. Instances were horrible three hour long LFGs, levelling content was just annoying.

Think it was Pally (tank), Druid (healer), Hunter and Shammy (healer) which made it max that expansion. I spent a few months just doing gold on the AH rather than just quitting.

I came back for Pandaria, but only after the Timeless Isle appeared. It was the BOA epics dropping which meant I could gear up my 90s before they’d hit max level. I enjoyed ALL my playstyles there, but not the monk (11 max level alliance) as much, but he was a free 85 boost (*). But still, each character felt powerful enough to kill a few mobs and level.

Draenor, I was in with a full set of 100s. I levelled them all, over a period, no flying. Garrisons made me some cash, but the base game and variety and most importantly, the POWER of the character felt right. I didn’t do much of Tanaan jungle for most of them, but a few got their epics, and got bored eventually. Instances were ok. Tanked when I needed to. Healed on my healers. It was an ok, expansion. I earned flying, but after all everyone hit 100.

Now, Legion. I’m not sure if its worse than Cata, but its certainly there abouts.

I’ve got (hang on, let’s get my shoes and socks off), Warrior, Shammy (healer/caster), Warlock and Hunter sitting there at 110 in Legion and, god it was painful. Except the Warrior. The Warrior was the god class this expansion. Arms, Fury or Protection, they were mass killers of mobs and self healers. Unkillable. The rest died like dogs, except the Warlock, of course, they’re always just dot dot farmers. Hunter as Marksman died more this time than any expansion. Shammy was slow killing caster (could not face making it another roguelike, like DK, Cat druid, Monk or Rogue), but I got there.

I tried the rest, and that’s mostly my problem with this expansion. Died like a dog, pretty much every character class not fully leveled (rest around 101-104), as well as 110 Shammy and Hunter. Struggled to kill every mob. Never got better with level, too, just as hard, possible harder, the closer you got to 110. Massive pain. I tried the recommended levelling specs, (this might have changed), fire for mage, combat for rogue, even changed my boomkin (now a ticklekin) to a bear to try and mass pull to see if it was like warrior, it was not).

I even went and levelled an ancient warrior alt on another server, my first character, from level 14 to 100, because the Warrior was so good.

I did try to start the flying achievement for a bit, it did help a few expansions when it sped things up for alts (think there was a book in Wrath, certainly in Outland). But that made the WOD flying achievement look like childsplay. I’d not mind the reputation grinds, but its Suramar which is the horrorshow.

Suramar, it’s like the guy who did the Stranglethorn pages has been let out of his cage again. Did a few weeks on that, and didn’t even finished a questline. What a horrible zone. Sneaking about in disguise continually, otherwise I’d pull half the level. Huge part of city a MASSIVE drop down in height, which is only accessible by a central staircase, or with whatever float spell your class might have (or goblin glider). Just painful.

I got about 70 world quests towards achievement. Broken shore opened, and got the loot fest for my hunter to make it bearable for a week. Then they scaled the mobs with gear, and I was dying like a dog again in the normal zones.

I looked at messing with earning gold, and none of the trades were good this time, except weirdly, the Tailor chucking out bags three to four times a week from last expansions cooldowns. Not the alchemy moneymaker, and why the hell are jewelcrafting and inscription still in the game when the jewels are barely used, and the glyphs cosmetic (they did earn a lot back in cata/pandaria). Gathering made a packet for a while after being useless in WOD though.

Now, I’d come back if they made flying less of a thousand hour grind (to make up most of the dps’s being useless), and if there were BOAs dropped on the Broken shore. Perhaps. Not even sure if the last one would tempt me with the ilevel matching with mobs now though.

So I pop by every so often to look at wow news to see if anything has improved, like it sometimes does near the end of expansions. Not holding out hope for this one though.

I do find it weird that some people put this as the best expansion for a while. Maybe I just have different criteria. I’m casual with no fixed guilds (each char is usually on a different guild, I’m actually a GM of one where everyone went idle now). Perhaps this expansion is just alt unfriendly, and I should just stay away. Pick your class, struggle with it to 110 (if not a warrior), and it’s tuned to make your main be challenged. Fair enough, in which case I’ll stay away, not for me…

Quite sad, really, given the time spent with the game…

(*) hang on, did I get a free 90 boost on Draenor, I can’t remember, and if so, can’t remember what I did with that?

I would really like to get flying Legion. It’s really my last goal for this expansion, after which I go back to my alts and making gold and exploring.

This who “get revered with armies of legionfall”, the last step I have, is a grindy grindy grindfest grind.

I just hit “honored”

Any suggestions for making #&&#*! go faster?

Different strokes for different folks and all that. I’m in the camp that thinks this has been a great expansion. But it seems I’m pretty much the opposite player as you in that I only have one toon at max level (enhance/resto shaman). though at one time or another I’ve had every class at max level (except rogue I think).

Also my guild is thriving right now. We had 22 folks come out last night for the first night of Tomb of Sargeras (we got 5/9 on normal, woo!). And I think how much fun I’m having in the game is significantly tied to how much fun my guild is having as a group. We a pretty social guild with lots of chatter on Discord and that has really helped me enjoy the game right now.

I totally get how someone that prefers leveling alts vs raiding & guild content would potentially have a much different perspective than me however.

PS I loved Suramar as a zone! (though I have to admit to occasionally being frustrated at lower ilvl’s, but that was part of the fun!) its a little less fun now that I can pretty much round up as many mobs as I can find and mow them down.

My secret was… not actually playing. I was traveling for the better part of a month so it’s not like I had a choice. (I will not play WoW on any network than my own. I learned that lesson the hard way back in Wrath. Getting the account unbanned and stolen items restored is nothing I ever want to repeat.)

Using the Legion phone app, I’d send champions obsessively on any mission that would yield Legionfall reputation tokens. When I finally got back to playing, I had dozens of them in my bags and in the mailbox. Went from “Neutral” to just short of “Revered” in one day, cashing those in.

Probably not applicable except to say, don’t disregard Order Hall missions as a valuable source of reputation.

Yeah, I get it, the game can be approached in different ways, but usually they seemed to have options for the alt people, and this time around that seems to have just disappeared. It’s like the strong voice on the design team for alts have left…

I usually play late at night, which pretty much knocks out any sort of guild experience. Guilds seemed to raid on Sunday evenings and Wednesday evenings. I’m on there past 10pm, and not doing weekends… Sure LFG and raid finder have been a help, but still I won’t be tuning gear or hitting higher levels of raiding…

But I like the different aspects. I like to tank, I like to heal, the playstyles for healers is so variable. Rogues were fun last few expansions with the mutilate spec stepping instantly behind a mob 20 feet away and stunlocking them to near death. Different DPS styles were cool, I liked arcane mage long cast/magic missles/ mob doesn’t get near you playstyle, oh god, pulled a second “run mage run!”…

I remember falling off a ledge on the timeless isle and landing in the middle of about 20 mobs as a blood dk on 1% health, and tanking my way back to 100% health and all mobs dead. Joyful times.

But few of the classes can seem to really deal with a couple of mobs this time around. I thought this might have been balanced after a while, but pretty much all the caster dps and melee dps were not powerful enough in this expansion, probably making it a challenge if that’s your main, but really boring if your fourth alt…

Are you sure you’re playing World of Warcraft and that you have the current expansion, Legion?

WoD was terrible for alts because there was so much emphasis on Garrisons.

But Legion is made for altoholics.

None of my toons is in a guild other than my own personal guild (no one in it but me and sometimes just the one toon) yet I have 7 toons at 110, all with a ilvl of 870+. The 3 current favorites (mage, paladin and DK) are all geared at 900+. I’ve got at least partial Heroic Nighthold experience on all 3 and full clear on 1. Two of those (mage & pally) are Exalted with Armies of Legionfall. All my top 3 can pull as many mobs as they want of whatever level and survive. I’ve mentioned before, the frigging mage can tank world bosses; the paladin can solo world bosses with over 100M health. You know the world dailies that are purple and the mob has like 400M health? Yeah, she can solo those too (it takes forever, but she can).

This xpac is easy and seems tailored to allow altoholics to flourish, IMO.

Whenever I try to log in to the game, what comes up is my Media Center (that blue field where you can look at pictures, videos and listen to music) I have tried everything I know, but it still happens.

I ran a virus scan, and no virus shows. Now this doesn’t happen on everything. I can get on google mail, for instance (and here).

Don’t know what else to do and was hoping someone else has this problem.

Thanks

Quasi

PS: Also tried Restore and shutdown and turning back on.

I’m struggling to work this out. Perhaps your mage etc are super dooper at 110, but the dmg classes I tried (boomkin, shady priest, ret pally, even prot pally, unholy dk, combat rogue, fire mage) all struggle to get one mob down at 100-101 and I know it gets a lot more difficult when it scales.

Ok, so last time I tried with one was was DK about February. I did try with my undergeared (blues and greens) 110 Elemental Shammy and a normal non elite 110 around Suramar and I died before it was 25% health… Painful.

I might have struggled through WOD because I levelled my rested alts after farming my legion resources daily, and the instances gave significant experience to help along, but apart from that…

I would say its the auto levelling of the mobs, but I’m struggling at 101, then again the gear I have from the last expansion isn’t much. Perhaps it’s that.

Not inspired to come back though…

Did you go through the initial class hall quests and get an artifact weapon for your spec?

Guys, my computer is too old to handle the RAM needed for Legion. Saving for a new gaming one, but right now, I am still playing Daenor. Three of my toon are 100. Think an entire reload of W7 would hel eradicate this problem? I just can’t figure out what’s going on. Maybe reloading the game?

Thanks Again

Huh.

I can’t ever recall my Order Hall guys getting a mission that gave such reputation, but I will certainly be on the look out for them now.

I did indeed, but it didn’t make that much of a difference as far as I’m concerned…

I’ve always thought that wow never had the need to be on the “upgrade bus”, it never had that much demand on graphics and memory. It shouldn’t do. Indeed, a lot of players I knew initially didn’t have powerful pcs.

However, since this expansion, and some of the last one, there’s been some VERY long loading screens. It did get a bit better on my other machine than the laptop with a faster cpu, gpu and 2 Gig more memory… So it could be performance demands. Still took a while on my main pc though, but it was getting unplayable on my laptop which isn’t that old (about 4 years old and could play likes of Max Payne 3 and Dead Space 3).

If you have a similar problem and find a solution I might be interested…

Like Quasi, my computer is too out of date to enjoy Legion. Actually, WoD was a bit stressful too, but at least I could turn all of the graphics settings to minimum and get through it. Even Tanaan was “doable” - the only hard part there was the Bleeding Hollow area, with all that mist or smoke or whatever it is. But then they upgraded the graphics in patch 7.0, and that really killed things for me. I think the main culprit is whatever they did with increasing the draw distance to ridiculous levels. I mean, now, if you turn up the draw distance, you can see the freaking Bastion of Twilight from Stormwind City. That is just completely ridiculous and unnecessary. And draw distance is something that resonates back through all older content. I used to enjoy being able to run a toon around Outland or Northrend and turn my graphics settings up, because the graphics in those expansions are the oldest in the game and thus less demanding … but now that draw distance 86s that idea. I can now maybe bump my graphics settings up to “2” in those zones. Whoopee.

The result is that I got my main (my ret paladin) to level 110 and then went back to Draenor, because the graphics in the Broken Isles, even on bare minimum settings, made it too laggy and aggravating. Which is a shame, because stuff looks amazing there.

So I’ve shuffled all the rest of my level 100 toons (every class except death knight and monk) on Lightbringer off to the Broken Isles just long enough to obtain their artifacts, and then it’s back to Draenor, doing garrison stuff and farming old raids for transmog. Those alts are now all level 101 or 102 from doing things other than Legion content.

Maxing out professions is also something I’ve always enjoyed, and I hate what they’ve done with them in Legion. I mean, my paladin is my alchemist/enchanter, and I seriously cannot learn any more alchemy recipes without running a dungeon to find a special cork? And even gathering professions - I have to learn some special technique to pick flowers here? C’mon man, we’re still on Azeroth, not some strange new world! So I’m just hitting the Darkmoon Faire faithfully every month and doing the profession quests. At 5 skill points a month, I should have all of my level 100+ alts’ professions at 800 in time for the next expansion. Though speaking of that, they apparently made the waters around Darkmoon Island require 600+ fishing skill to catch anything besides junk, so while my high-level toons can complete all of the DMF quests in about 10-15 minutes each, the fishing quest takes that long all by itself for my low-level alts because I have to hop on my Azure Water Strider from Pandaria and circle the island looking for the pools to fish from, and that’s a crapshoot. Last month, one of my low-level alts made two complete laps around the island before he found his first active pool.

So, like I said, most of my game time now is just farming old raids. One disappointing thing, though, is that I can easily farm Cataclysm raids at level 100, so I thought that my level 110 paladin could solo Pandaria raids. Nope. Well, at least not the one I tried. Wasn’t the Terrace of Everlasting Spring the first raid of MoP? I tried that one and got stonewalled on the very first boss. I mean, I was in no danger of dying, but I couldn’t seem to do any damage at all to the first boss. Probably mechanics - I think the guy I was fighting was getting healed by one of the other bosses in that group, but I couldn’t figure out which one.

The Heroic Firelands Ragnaros fight is amusing-annoying. How did it work “at level” with a raid group after Cenarius and friends showed up? Because when I solo it now, I get Raggy down to like 1 hit point, then Cenarius and the others show up and apparently heal him back to 50% while Cenarius yells, “Now heroes! He is weakened!” or something like that. Yeah, right, thanks for the “help”, hippies. And farming these old raids on my shadow priest now that they’ve taken away all of her AOE is just a tedious pain in the ass, spamming Shadow Word: Pain over and over and over and over to kill the trash. In many raids I can just run past and ignore the trash, but in Firelands you have to kill so much trash just to get the first boss, Shannox, to spawn. Ugh.

Q, you always come up with the most interesting system problems on your WoW PC!

First things first: your problem description of your Windows (XP?) PC starting Windows Media Player instead of (or in addition to, and on top of?) World of Warcraft is… beyond bizarre. That is a humdinger of a misconfiguration. Either the icon to run WoW is accidentally pointing to Media Player, or the Media Player icon accidentally got WoW’s picture (so it looks like you’re starting WoW, but you’re not)… or something more esoteric. (Or user error. TBH, that’s always a possibility for any user in the universe. NO slight intended to you, and that’s why I won’t dwell on that – you’ll have to assess that for yourself.)

Uninstalling and Reinstalling WoW should fix the icon link, if it’s the first problem. (Or else manually re-pointing the icon to the correct program, but that’s the kind of thing I’d never try to walk a user through. Either I’d fix it myself (“Move!..”) or trust that user to be a power user enough to know how to fix it themselves after I suggest that’s what the problem is.

Regarding Windows 7, yeah, upgrading to Win 7 may help. Can you do that? I didn’t know it’s even available any more. The last time I upgraded a box to Win 7 was nearly a year ago, and finding a legit install disk from a legit retailer with a legit key was worse than pulling hens’ teeth.

I dunno, TBH. It almost seems like the kind of system problem that calls for someone with Windows troubleshooting expertise to look over your shoulder and spot the root cause, but none of us are in a position to do that. Sorry if this isn’t very helpful (for as long as it is :frowning: )

Order hall missions for reputation have an icon that shows the icon of the rep faction (truly, it shows a picture of the icon of the rep token itself). So the Nightborne faction token missions show a Nightborne faction icon (Arcandor tree). The Highmountain faction token shows a picture of the Thunder Totem. Etc. The Armies of Legionfall icon is… a tasteful orange ball shot through with green fel veins. Yum. This icon. This will be the mission reward icon for any mission that rewards AoL rep tokens (usually, 2 250 point tokens, plus a chance for a third random rep token if you score the bonus completion). Have fun!

Weird. I’ve been farming (Normal 25 man) Terrace of Everlasting Spring and Heart of Fear for one of the Shaman sets. I usually kill the first boss of ToES in about 10 seconds (but then I’m a DPS class with ilvl around 908).

Only place I have had any trouble at all was the 4th boss of Heart of Fear. I learned you gotta focus him down quickly or else he permanently freezes you in amber, then slowly whittles away your health for about 10 minutes.

Also - I think ToES was actually the 3rd raid in Pandaria (after Mogu’shan Palace & Heart of Fear).

Huh.

No, I can’t recall ANY such mission offering ANY rep for ANY Legion faction. Maybe I’ve just had bad rolls of the dice?

Guide to ToES.

One of the bosses is, indeed, a healer. If you don’t want to see any healing in that fight, kill him first.

Ick, I hate those mechanics. Slow, slow, uninterruptible death.

Yup. Mogu’shan Vaults was apparently non-tier. T14 is split between ToES and Heart of Fear, in that order of raid availability. T15 is Throne of Thunder. T16 is Siege of Orgrimmar.
