And you couldnt talk about the boards on the boards. I have also found the Paradox boards horribly modded generally. A few mods were just abrupt assholes.

…Sometimes a poster will come on the board and propose some unique theory or perspective that they are not really able to defend, but keep arguing the point ad infinitum. It’s not really piling on when other posters point out the flaws in the theory.

As I mentioned, cladking at that point had made over 800 posts over a period of six weeks, and I don’t think had convinced anyone, nor had anyone been able to convince him of the flaws in his ideas. At that point it was just the same arguments repeated over and over again. There was little point in continuing the thread.

So, I guess the answer is, “this board doesn’t like long rambly threads that don’t go anywhere new.”

I used to moderate a wacky little unregistered forum several years ago, where I was accused, among other things, of being a Jewish Chinese communist and a devout Catholic in the pay of Beijing to encourage racist and hateful posts to up the hit count because this would somehow benefit - - - Beijing, don’t know why.

2. Anyone who thinks this is the worse on the net never belonged to a Yuku group. The whole system basically died from poor moderation across their boards.

The worst is another board I deleted from my bookmarks awhile back, where unlike here all moderator decisions were done on the hush-hush; if you had a question about a suspension or banning, YOU would be subject to a suspension yourself just for asking about it.

I was once warned for merely being suspected of plagiarising another site, no link to said phantom article, accompanied by a bunch of passive-aggressive sheepish apologetic verbiage a la “OK, so we only suspect that you have stolen an article from another site, so we are kind of sort of going to warn you, is that alright with you?”

After a few too many respected regulars were mysteriously suspended (they were not trolls either) with no explanations whatsoever (and the mods didn’t even have the honesty or forthrightness to put BANNED next to their names, just “suspended” unto the end of time…), I just said the hell with it.

don’t know if it still is this way, but the Anandtech forums were like that. Moderators were anonymous and omnipotent.

That one. The one where I was warned for starting a post with “Um”, and another time warned and threatened with banning because I started a new thread that already existed, but which I couldn’t find because of their horrible search function.

I just logged in for the very last time to write a goodbye speech.

I joined to respond to an existing thread. This thread then became quite extensive due to some debate and moderator insults. The moderators et al kept threatening to close it. I suppose the culture here is to always toe the line when it comes to established beliefs and understandings so there was naturally a tendency to pile on. Eventually the thread was closed with a moderator comment that such a thread shouldn’t happen again.

I consider this reprehensible to close a thread when shouting down dissenting beliefs isn’t effective so I immedeately logged out with the intention of never logging in again.

But lastnight I had a little extra time so I thought I’d ask Cecil Adams what his opinion was. No doubt his moderators think a lot like he does but I have great respect for Cecil Adams unlike hios moderators. I wanted a shot at hearing his opinion since in his extensive research he may have formed an opinion even if a nascent one.

Just for asking the question the thread was closed. I even specifically said I wasn’t going to argue any points and merely wanted any opinions that were supplied. I was given a warning.

Need I even tell the moderators what they can do with the “notification” I have.

I won’t be back and won’t log in again barring an apology.

Yeah man, I can see why you’d bolt. That was probably one of the most bruising smack downs of woo I’ve ever seen, and a great example of the debunkers art that really shows how good this board is. Just skimming that train wreck it was great to see so many posters engaging you (while you continued to assert, handwave, obfuscate and generally look really, REALLY bad) AND doing some great humor. More than once I was reading some of the posts and I cracked up all over again, or saw something I missed before that was just hilarious.

Though you will be missed, o’ King of Clad, you have become a byword on this board and this thread will be looked back on fondly as how you debunk with someone who doggedly asserts ‘facts’ in spite of everything being told them. Fair well, and may your next board (unlike the 4 or 5 I found you had posted this non-sense in prior to your jaunt here on the StraightDope) be the woo board you are looking for, credulously accepting of every assertion you make and waiting on your next pronouncement of wisdom! Did you ever check out the Ancient Aliens big hair guys site btw? I think you might find what you seek there man!

Although, thinking about it, The King o’ Clad MIGHT find Trumps forum a good fit after all. Hell…Trump might fund Claddy for a research project because it might be a good foundation for how we get Mexico to build the Great Wall of the US across our southern borders! We could use previously unknown cold geyser powered machines to build them, allowing our Mexican brethren the ability to sit in the shade sipping Perrier and just pulling a lever to hoist the stones up onto the wall! I have a bunch of cousins that could definitely get in on that action!
