I just logged in for the very last time to write a goodbye speech.

I joined to respond to an existing thread. This thread then became quite extensive due to some debate and moderator insults. The moderators et al kept threatening to close it. I suppose the culture here is to always toe the line when it comes to established beliefs and understandings so there was naturally a tendency to pile on. Eventually the thread was closed with a moderator comment that such a thread shouldn’t happen again.

I consider this reprehensible to close a thread when shouting down dissenting beliefs isn’t effective so I immedeately logged out with the intention of never logging in again.

But lastnight I had a little extra time so I thought I’d ask Cecil Adams what his opinion was. No doubt his moderators think a lot like he does but I have great respect for Cecil Adams unlike hios moderators. I wanted a shot at hearing his opinion since in his extensive research he may have formed an opinion even if a nascent one.

Just for asking the question the thread was closed. I even specifically said I wasn’t going to argue any points and merely wanted any opinions that were supplied. I was given a warning.

Need I even tell the moderators what they can do with the “notification” I have.

I won’t be back and won’t log in again barring an apology.

If you think this is the worst moderation on the net, you obviously had no experience with televisionwithoutpity.com. It’s, um, unfortunate, yeah, unfortunate, that it’s no longer in existence.

I used to moderate a wacky little unregistered forum several years ago, where I was accused, among other things, of being a Jewish Chinese communist and a devout Catholic in the pay of Beijing to encourage racist and hateful posts to up the hit count because this would somehow benefit - - - Beijing, don’t know why. It was a lot of fun, especially when people would rag on us for moderating without pay - notwithstanding the fact that we would sit down once every year or so for nachos and tea and the like, courtesy of management. It was kind of a joy to mod the place, except that it was lot like hotboxing mental illness. To mods everywhere - Sláinte!

If we could just agree on the basic fact that the pyramids were built by Muslims 900 years ago (5100 years after Creation) to store grain, canned goods, and miscellaneous office supplies, using the forced labor of enslaved Christian infidels who definitely didn’t use ramps but drove the stones straight up using geysers of Islamic holy water powered by Jews, we’d be a lot further ahead.

I don’t think the one-trick-ponies stay around that long. If all one has is aliens building the pyramids I think a thorough wrist slapping will drive them off. On the other hand, if there’s a lot more about aliens besides the pyramids, he might just stick around to offer more evidence.

This indicates you’re much more interested in crying , “poor, poor, me!” than illustrating where/how you’ve been so horribly wronged.

Since most of us, as a result, have no idea what you’re on about, we’ll just say, “K, bye!”

Can I ask why the pyramid thread was closed? I read the first few pages as it was written. And I just checked the last page out of curiosity. It looks like a lot of posters were piling on cladking. I couldn’t tell whether he’d modified his theory, or not, but he seemed polite. Was it the multiple attacks? Was it just that this board doesn’t like long rambly threads that don’t go anywhere new? Something else?

Okay, that thread needed to be closed. I will say this though, I don’t think moderators should be snarky when they got their mod hat on.

I mean, if they are just participating in a thread, then fine, snark away. But if you’re taking moderator action, be professional.

On the Straight Dope, snark is part of the professional image.

Sometimes a poster will come on the board and propose some unique theory or perspective that they are not really able to defend, but keep arguing the point ad infinitum. It’s not really piling on when other posters point out the flaws in the theory.

As I mentioned, cladking at that point had made over 800 posts over a period of six weeks, and I don’t think had convinced anyone, nor had anyone been able to convince him of the flaws in his ideas. At that point it was just the same arguments repeated over and over again. There was little point in continuing the thread.
