Would ex-President Trump run in 2024?

On big question is how aggressively a Biden Justice Department will challenge voter suppression laws and Trump/GOP campaign skulduggery. The Administration is not without tools to challenge discriminatory voting practices. And even if those efforts end up being blunted by Trump judges, it will shine a spotlight on what they’re up to.

But if the Administration backs down out of fear of being seen as “partisan”, then we’re doomed.

I hear that Trump has already declared victory in 2024 (unless, of course, the election is stolen).

There’s only five states at issue here, and one of them already has the formula down. The other four (Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) need to follow suit, and find their own Stacey Abrams.

for VP he will probably pick young sexy blond female under 45. Ivanka will be high on the list.

The starting point would be to nuke the filibuster, and pass legislation that helps people (i.e., voters). Currently, Democrats have a situation where we have a majority on both houses of Congress, and the White House. And we’ll run out of options on legislation unless we nuke the filibuster. We already have the cards stacked against us, as you laid out in your post. We should at least do things that put Democrats in a better position to govern when we have majorities everywhere (which doesn’t happen everyday).

Really people need to stop hanging their hats on that, just as on that “oh, there are going to be more minorities, and the new young voters are going to make a difference”.

We need to beat his gang. Not count on a just universe to save us.

I think you’re right.

As do I. Demographics is not necessarily destiny, or at least not soon enough, in American politics.

Whether or not he actually does, especially if it looks like she’s going to win, is another thing.

Seems like Trump has been spending far more time and effort attacking Republicans than Democrats thus far. Is that a bad thing?

Not a bad thing by a long shot in my book. And I truly hope he runs in 2024. He would get crushed in the general election.

Ron DeSantis OTOH, I worry about.

  1. Trump will not end up in jail.

  2. The fact he hates the job would not stop him from running, if only to seek attention and build a dynastic brand, regardless of whether he could win.

  3. Things change. But he could run. He could win. He has kept substantial support, as crazy as that seems to 90% of Canadians.

  4. Things do not always improve.

If not for the obvious danger of him actually winning again, I would really be enjoying the way Donald is dicing up the current group of GOP aspirants, stymying their personal ambitions for eight years and letting them know in no uncertain terms that their proper places are immediately behind him with lips fully puckered.

My prediction: He ain’t running in 2024, even he’s not a convict by then. That’s all. I’ll try and make it back to the thread in '24 to see how I did.

I’m not concerned about DeSantis. He strikes me as another Scott Walker—a charisma-free governor who looks electable on paper, but collapses under national media scrutiny.

I also believe that Trump’s appeal among his fanbase is non-transferable. It’s a personality cult, and there’s only one personality. Even if Trump personally anoints DeSantis and says, “Obey him as you would me,” it’s not going to work. GOP turnout will be below 2020 levels if Trump doesn’t run.

At the moment, I don’t think he’ll run again. He’s enjoying hanging out in Mar-a-Lago. He can play golf every day, and Republicans make pilgrimages to Florida to kiss his ass. He and Don Jr. can rule the galaxy party as father and son. He gets all the former-president perks and doesn’t have to do any actual work. Why mess that up? If he felt ignored and marginalized, I could see him running again just for the attention, but right now he’s swimming in attention.

And how does this differ from when he was president? Doing actual work? Don’t be silly. True there was no golf course at the White House, but there were TV sets and he spent most of his time there.

My only question is whether he can keep his growing dementia under wraps. If he does, he would likely get elected, given the amount of voter suppression states are adding.

I’m basing this on Bob Woodward’s books on Trump. He did have things he was obligated to do and and show up for, even if he thought they were stupid. He sat through briefings and meetings and traveled to meet foreign leaders. In the second book, Rage, he complains to Woodward that he’s been “working [his] ass off” due to the pandemic. He probably goofed off more than any other POTUS, but he couldn’t get out of every responsibility.

Now he has no responsibilities at all, not even petty ones, and does only what he feels like doing. Remember how Trump walked out of a Medal of Freedom ceremony? He’ll never be bothered with stuff like that again.

The locals can get Trump on the 2024 state ballots, then he can run a front porch campaign from Mara-Largo. Maybe do a couple of rallies where they would be profitable.

His purpose is only to siphon off enough votes to ensure a Republican loss. It will send the message that he is still in control. Clearly an effortless, petty gesture. Very Trump.

I was kind of wondering if something like this would explain the lack of rallies; ill health, mentally or physically.
