Would the new Republic of Texas use the Oil Standard to back its currency? How would the new Republic of Texas maintain its highways, etc.? What would happen when the Federal Government freezes the assets of the new Republic of Texas? What would the new Republic of Texas do when the Federal Government blockaded all its ports?
The idea of Texas seceding is foolish although it might be a good thing if they did.
Why would the United States freeze Texas assets or blockade? Wouldn’t it be more in the interest of all concerned to have friendly relations and trade?
If the Texans have a brilliant scheme to seize all the Federal military hardware in the state as Act ! of the rebellion, they could end up with one hell of an army and air force, at the least. It may be that many of the units station at these bases are deployed overseas somewhere at the moment, but the clever plotters will wait!
7 air force bases:
Lackland AFB
Sheppard AFB
Dyess AFB
Goodfellow AFB
Brooks AFB
Laughlin AFB
Randolph AFB
4 Naval bases:
Corpus Christi NAS
Fort Worth NAS
Kingsville NAS
NS Ingleside
4 Army bases:
Fort Hood
Fort Bliss
Fort Sam Houston
Red River Army Depot
Just a cursory glance at some of the units based there f-16s and c-130s. But hey, even Madison has its own f16 squadron.
Because they’re essentially stealing the property of the federal government (listed in the previous post), and depriving it’s citizens (namely me) of their rights?
Since I live in TX, I often hear people bring this up. I refer them to U.S. history 1861-1865. It’s been tried before. It didn’t work.
Maybe not. According to EIA numbers, Texas has proved oil reserves of 529 MM barrels ( ~ 11% of the US totals ), the vast majority being in the Permian basin. They produce 960,000 barrels a day yet consume almost 5.5 MM per day. Assuming they plan to go it alone and could increase production to satisfy their current demand, they will deplete their reserves in about three months and have to start playing nice with others. From the pictures I have seen of Gov. Perry, his hair alone must consume a barrel a day.
To preserve the Union? Did we (the Union) have friendly relations and trade with the previous states who attempted to secede? Why would the New Republic of Texas deserve to be an exception?
True, but these bases are manned by soldiers who I’m guessing are largely not from Texas, and would defend them against any civilian/militia attempt to take them over.
Just voting would of course not constitute a crime. However what would of course happen is a Texas resident would file suit in Federal court in response to the proposed legislation. The SCOTUS would definitely uphold that secession is not permissable. Further since removing American citizens in Texas from their rightful constitutional protections would constitute a criminal civil rights violation (google “criminal civil rights violation” I do not know chapter and section) any officer of the State of Texas who attempted to commit any act depriving a Texan of their full rights as American citizens would be arrestable.
As I also said the Federal government would Federalize the Texas NG and that can be done at any time. Failure to report for duty is desertion. If a large percentage of Texas officials started doing things like creating a Texas currency, postal system, closing access to Federal courts, evicting Federal agencies all of those actions constitute various crimes.
There is no secessionist movement in Texas worth taking seriously. Hawaii and Vermont have larger secessionist movements.
Governor Rick Perry was talking B.S. to score points with the anti-tax crowd, and EVERYBODY present knew it, including Perry himself. He is not and never has been a proponent of secession. And every little old lady in the Rio Grande Valley getting a Social Security check would have killed him, if anybody thought he was serious.
