My analogy on patriotism vs nationalism.
After several hours of solid drinking, the bartender decides to cut Smantha off, and amidst the profanity filled tirade that follows bouncer gets her into a taxi to send her home to her two sons, Pat and Nat, who have different reactions.
Pat: Mom, you know I love you, but I think you may have an alcohol problem. I really think that we need to consider what your drinking is doing to you and your family. I want you to go to rehab.
Nat: Those assholes, how dare they throw my mother out, I’m going to march over there with a bat to teach those guys a lesson. Yes, mom I’ll stop by the liquor store on the way back and get you your bottle of scotch. Unlike Pat, I actually love you.

It goes well beyond mere opinion, though. The Republicans take their opinions and put them into policy. They deregulate businesses that were regulated in the first place for valid reasons. They implement tax cuts where they do not belong, when cutting taxes in the ways that they do has consistently been shown to have net-negative effects. They say stupid shit that is clearly all kinds of wrong, and base their actions on base ignorance. When something is broken and what we have been doing has clearly not been helping, they tell us we just have not been doing enough of that thing, and we need to do it harder.
So, yeah, you are welcome to your opinion, just fail to force me to eat your fucked-up mistakes.
Would the world be better off without a violent, anti-democratic, anti-science, fanatical religious political movement? Yes, yes it would. Ask Afghanistan.

This is what passes for Republican “opinion” these days. Come here and we’re armed, and we’ll shoot you on sight.
The fact that you’re feigning concern about the inability to discuss differing opinions in America is laughable. When I watch “lamestream” media I hear reports of events (biased as they may be). When I tune into “fair and balanced” media I hear for calls to kill people.
Republican opinions (and discussion thereof) boils down to “this is what I want, and I’ll kill you if I don’t get it.” Pardon the rest of us if that doesn’t feel like an opinion worthy of consideration.
