Just to point out, both men and woman have often selected to join organisations that supply power or education or lifetime support in exchange for celibacy - Holy Orders (nuns and monks), the Priesthood, the Knights Templar etc.

It isn’t that much of a stretch to imagine making the choice to be a Jedi.
